The need to abolish mandatory schooling

Yes, that's right. I am completely against mandatory schooling, I believe it is very damaging, does favors to no one, and needs to be gotten rid of immediately. Please note: I am not against learning. There is a difference between forced schooling and the enjoyment of learning.

Why should we get rid of it as soon as possible? For several reasons:

1) People, or children, are different by nature. We all have different lifestyles and likes. So why should we be required to attend school, something that does not work for the majority of people, for years, being forced to do pointless work?

2) Additionally, we have lives. God forbid you don't go to school, or do your homework, despite the fact that you had no say in the matter. I find it a constant source of amazement when people wonder why their kids are doing poorly in school... of course they're doing badly, that is to be expected! They don't like it there, which many parents completely ignore.

3) Intelligence and knowledge is diverse. School fits ONE shoe, ONE mold, ONE system, and that's it. And again, god forbid you if you say otherwise.

To say that mandatory schooling in any way represents a free nation or that it represents "strong values" or a "stimulating learning environment" is completely false.

Great points, and I completely agree; but what are the alternatives? I know about homeschooling, but is this universally accepted once the child is "of age"?
Should there be more alternative schools established with more of an "unschooling" approach? Would these schools prepare youth for trades or be college prep?

Deathontwolegs, Sorry, you've got to go to school. Its the law and there's a good reason for it. I'm sure you'd rather sleep late, hang out with your friends, and play video games all day than go to school and learn things like math, English, science and social studies that may someday turn you into a responsible productive citizen. Guess what, the real world has rules, regulations and expectations also. So get used to it! Nobody gets to live their life doing exactly as they please.

So suck it up, go to school, do your homework, mind your teachers and do your part to become an informed, productive citizen.

Do you advocate a mandatory driver's license test after a certain age? Yes, absolutely. Written test? Yes, for basic knowledge and cognitive reasoning. Road test? Absolutely. Vision test? Absolutely. If you do, at what age should these tests begin? 70 years. My mother set a very good example for me when she turned in her license at 74. She told me that her reflexes were diminished, as was her eyesight. She was unsure if she could react properly and in a timely manner in certain situations. I thought it was a very brave and selfless decision. We live in the "country" and giving up her license was a hardship for her, but she had such valid reasons that I admired her strength. She looked for alternate means of transportations and adjusted her lifestyle to accommodate it. Last year I was getting gas and there was an elderly couple there, as well. They were in a large sedan (thank goodness), and as I was filling up the gentleman emerged from the station after paying for his gas. It took him the entire time I was filling up my tank to walk to his car, using a cane. He obviously was having difficulty walking and when he reached his car had trouble getting into the driver's seat. He started the car and moved very slowly towards the exit. By that time I had finished filling up and paying and was behind him at the exit. I watched as he proceeded to pull out into the road right in front of an oncoming car, almost causing an accident. He hadn't looked either way, and I know this because I was watching him to see what he'd do. I took his license plate number and called the local police on my cell phone. I let them know our location and that the gentleman was a hazard on the road. I asked that they at least attempt to observe him. I don't know if anything came of it but I would like to think so. I certainly sympathize with many seniors with regard to their independence, but I also think it's a selfish decision on their part not to be willing to give up their license if they aren't capable of driving safely. They're putting many people at risk. I'm 56 and I will gladly do all the above at 70 years of age. Gladly, willingly, and responsibly.

I'd like to add my (civil) 2 cents: TexasCatherder has a good question, and there are many right answers here. - Do you "need" a kitchen range vent? Yes, in most jurisdictions using international building code, some kind of kitchen ventilation is required. If you don't want it, don't put it in. But it may haunt you upon inspection at resale of the home. - No, few jurisdictions require a big ole' "range hood" over the range. In my community, it just needs to be some kind of vent that can circulate the right number of CFMs for the space. For example, a friend recently renovated her kitchen; she didn't want a big hood over her range in the island; and according to code, she went with a small wall-vent on the other side of the room on an exterior wall. That's enough for the "needs" of code. - But yes, like many have noted, a range hood does a better job of capturing grease and moisture than a wall vent. I'll bet my friend's lovely white kitchen wall gets a grimy film around that wall vent in a year or so. - Besides grease and water vapor, yes, gas-fueled heat sources produce toxins. It's not enough to kill or annoy most people, but the cumulative effects of the toxins isn't good, and those who are sensitive to allergies may suffer, and it's generally not a good idea to burn stuff (including chicken or toast) without ventilation. - Ventilation is important for indoor air quality and the structural integrity of the home. One thing that we recently became aware of is the need for ventilation just to get rid of moisture. If you have a well-sealed and insulated home, every-day water vapor from cooking, cleaning, bathrooms, laundry, etc. can build up and not escape the house. It can cause condensation inside walls and windows, which can lead to mold, which is a major indoor air quality issue in our part of the country. Additionally, although it doesn't seem logical at first, it can lead to structural problems. Air in a home circulates from colder regions to warmer regions, and the moist air goes with it. There's a photo in a an old-house-renovation book we have that shows rotting roof rafters in an attic: Rotting not from a leaky roof, but because of long-term water standing in a basement and crawl-space! It was three floors away -- how could that be? Air circulation moves the moisture up. - Anyhow, it sounds like our dear OP TexasCatherder got the point that ventilation is important. So maybe we can help her now focus on where to put it? Rather than debating the pros and cons of ventilation, perhaps we could start a new thread to help her with layout? She's going to have a beautiful kitchen, and folks here are great at taking the cook's priorities and giving suggestions for layout to help reach those goals.

Fearing that your mere mention of the "p" word will get this post zapped (as in my experience, anything with the remotest of connections always does suffer that end), I will, nonetheless, take a stab @ response. :D We judge politicians largely on the basis of their speeches. I can't agree with this statement. I can only think of a few memorable speeches by less than a handful of politicians. Mostly they say the same thing over & over & over again like automatons. Even the best written speech can suffer from a poor delivery. I am sure that GWB had speech writers too, but his delivery much of the time was ..... errrmmm ..... "off" ( to put it respectfully). The ones you mentioned had the delivery down pat. They were/are able to make a connection with the audience & that's a large factor in a "great speech". I think Presidential speech writers have a responsibility to put into words the thinking, beliefs, points, ideas, etc that the President himself wants... the writer just fixes it up to make it into a "presentable" format. It takes quite a bit of time to write any speech..... so it seems to me quite acceptable that a professional be delegated to get it whipped into shape while the President or other politician uses the time in other (hopefully) useful ways. I think that would be true of any other politician, CEO, or high profile person who was called upon to give a speech, i.e. assign the job to the person who does this sort of thing well, while I figure out the budget, or resolve this or that issue. And the converse...... if the politico had poor speech writing skills, but everything else about him/her were of superior qualities.... the poor speech probably would give people the erroneous impression that, "This person is a dolt." Good topic & thought provoking.

Thank You so much everyone for your replies. To try and answer some questions, last year she went to the registration and was told her child then would have to go to kg even though she was born 8 hours before the cut off. but the parents really felt their girl was not ready so just did not register her and sent her to a private pre k , thinking that this year they would then accept her at the school but now this year they are saying no, they will put her in grade one. she was born sept 30th and the cut off in Quebec is oct. 1st. now in Quebec we have the French boards and English boards, my daughter wanted the French school because it is walking distance from her home and most neighbors will be going there. They are a very traditional type school with strick guidelines that don't seem to be easily crossed. the English board, is much more pliable and seem to try and work with the families. Their are strick rules in Quebec about the eligibility of who can go to the English schools and luckily my gd because off her parents and grand parents English education background will be eligible. the English board is willing to accept her with open arms. The English school is about 2 miles from her house and they would bus her for kg and grade 1,2. after that she walks or we drive her. so, I know most people will say then go to the English and be done with it. 1). french school....closer, more immediate neighbors going, I think a better stronger school for education but that is probably why they are not flexible. 2) English school.....further, less friends close by on street, a more flexible program which I saw before as not as good but maybe that is better, who knows?.. 3)..... The language itself is not a problem, my gd already speaks both languages and the English school is 100 percent immersion of French for k, and grade one and two. it helps me to write all this out because I think it makes things more clearer for making decisions but I still like to hear people sake on things. again academically I am not overly concerned, it is her emotional upheavals that will give her problems. It would take me too long to try and explain her sometimes strange behaviors. Ok, now I am rambling...

Deathontwolegs....what grade are you actually enrolled in for school and what grade *should* you be in per your chronological age?

I agree 100% with wireweiners. There are excellent reasons behind most of the school requirement (not every decision is right for all), but deal with it, and become a productive citizen.

In Ohio, parents are free to homeschool their children. School isn't mandatory for parents who want to educate their child themselves.

im not necessarity against mandatory schooling, because it would be almost impossible and incredlously expensive for us to learn advanced subjects by oursleves, however i will agree that the way in which academics are executed are utterly pathetic and they do so little to help people that you actually degrade as a human being by being subjected to them

school is necessary but the idiocy in which it is run could be abolished and some true academic prowess could be shoved in until uou actually left knowing something everyday instead of hating the admin because they dont like the way you dress

and as for being an informed, productive citizen...did that phrase come directly from you schools "statement" towards it students about 10 or 20 years ago

im not cutting you guys down, but the system hasd lost a lot of efficency since even a few years ago, and if you were agitated by it everyday like the students now, youd be very belligent and anti-school as well

I have nothing but "praise" for our kids teachers. They helped me make my kids what they are today. I could not have done it without their help.. Many kids and parents are so different today,. The kids want to do their own thing and the parents want them to also. NO DICIPLINE.. I believe in freedom but there is a place for everything. I say if you don't want your kids in school then home school them yourself. Kids and parents that don't want their kids there are a disruption to the class anyway. I have seen kids that have no respect for anyone or anything. Sad picture. This is just life. I wanted our kids to have the best chance at life that they could got. School was a huge part of it for us...

Ad baculum, ad hominem, ad baculum. Fallacious argument diagnosed and summarily dismissed.
If you are going to claim that there is good reason for school, you'd better be prepared to back it up. I've heard it said that an adolescent of average intelligence can learn an ENTIRE grade school's (1-12) worth of math in a matter of months. I don't have the sources to back that up, but I'd like to see opposing documentation proving that it takes 12 years. So why aren't kids offered 'graduate early if you can prove you know enough of math that's necessary' tests sometime in their schooling? Because it's not the math that matters. Better question, what constitutes "necessary" mathematical aptitude in the first place? Let's see, you've got to know enough to make change for each denomination of bill and coin in circulation. You've got to be able to read speed limit signs. After that much, what else needs to be done that can't be solved with a calculator?
But even that's misleading, since it suggests that anyone who didn't go to school would need one to function in everyday society, which is patently false as proven by the thriving homeschooling movement (where it is legal).
I believe that in order to live and collaborate with others peacefully, only three things are required:
1. The discipline to leave others alone when they request.
2. The knowledge to sustain yourself hygienically speaking (food, cleanliness, all those basics).
3. Standard early-age developmental socialization with other humans.
In the vast majority of cases, all three of these are provided by a person's family. In the minority where that is not the case, it is your duty as defender of the status quo to prove that a 12-year stint in a glorified concentration camp - for everyone - is the necessary remedy.
Seems to me as absurd as advising that the punishment for thirst should be compulsory drowning.
