30-year-old Craftsman won't start
Comments (8)Thanks, Bill, for the link and the advice. The air filter on my mower is a cyclinder-type that clips on in the front and is connected by a hose. I don't think it's ever gotten any oil on it, but removing it is easy so I tried that w/o success. BTW, my old spark plug was a mess, so I replaced it. But I can see how the condenser and/or points could also be a mess. Ironically, I was in a mower store when a guy with an 18-year-old Craftsman came in to buy (I think) a condenser, probably not the same as mine, but it cost him $40. I'll have to decide if I can replace condenser and points and find out what the parts cost. Cleaning the carburetor sounds like a logical and cheap step, and something I should do anyway. Your manual shows lots of different carbs. I haven't pinned down which exactly I have (my parts list says it's "Carburetor No. 631619"). I don't see a brass nut, but in the exploded parts view in my parts list it looks like a very simple carb. So maybe I can do something with it. In the meantime I went ahead and bought a new mower, a Lawn Boy 10685. But I'm going to hold onto my 30-year-old Craftman, if for no other reason than nostalgia and its excellent lightweight magnesium alloy deck that looks as good as new. Replacing the engine altogether as someone else suggested is also an option, but now that I have a new mower I'm not in a hurry to try that. I've printed out the advice I've gotten here and downloaded that PDF manual. Thanks again!...See MoreMy 1 year old won't leave me alone!
Comments (6)I've had days like that. I think you need to set some goals of 'me' time and figure out some ways to make it work. Part of that is getting your dh to help and part will be teaching your child to be more independent. You already know that your dh needs to help you more and give you a break. That's the hard part. I would suggest telling him you need help. I have to ask/tell my dh the same thing. If I want help getting the kids to bed or help getting them to brush their teeth, I have to ask him. He doesn't just jump in there. The same goes for when I need 'me' time. My dh isn't unwilling to help and he doesn't take subtle hints. He is a good guy, but he needs someone to flat out tell him to help. At a year and a half, your ds probably likes a little more physical or outdoor activities. I'd probably start by asking your dh to take ds to the park or go for a walk or even play ball in the yard. Your dh should be able to do that without needing you there. Tell him you need time by yourself. If your presence at home is too handy, then physically remove yourself. Go get get a haircut, go shopping, or take your own walk. Do something for yourself even if it is grocery shopping without a child in the cart. I'm guessing you're a SAHM. I would suggest finding some other SAHM's out there and letting your kids play together. If you could find one or form one, a playgroup would be great for support for you and playmates for your child. Other ways to meet parents with children would be to call around and find out about various preschool activities in your area. Most libraries have a reading hour. Go on a couple of different days to see if one group is better than another. If you have a zoo, they may have something. Stick your child in a stroller and go walking around the neighborhood. Youll meet some local people and possibly others with small children. Some churches have childrens programs like choir that you and your child could participate in. Money may/may not be a factor for you in getting other help. Another option would be to find a preschool or Mom's Day out that would take your child for a few hours a day or two a week. Meeting other other moms for that little bit of interaction would probably help you tremendously. It would help your ds, because it would distract him and teach him to play with others. Things may not magically change overnight. You can do it. Pick a small goal for yourself for this weekend such as a trip to the store by yourself. Go buy a few flower bulbs or seeds to plant in the yard this week if the weather is nice. It'll give you something to look forward to and it will be a distraction. I think you'll start feeling better....See More3 year old won't stay in bed at bedtime
Comments (15)Okay. I'm in the same boat. My daughter is almost 3 and has been in a twin bed for 3 months. There are nights that she does pretty well with staying in bed. I assume it's from being so tired. And there are nights when I have to go back in about 2 or 3 times within the hour. But, last night was the worst. I don't think she slept at all. We did the usual routine - bath, stories, prayer, lights out (except for night light). I won't leave the door open at all cuz I know she will come out for sure. Usually she will get up and just sit against the wall next to her door and cry. Then, I or my husband will go in and put her back in bed. We usually ask if something scared or or ask what is wrong. She never answers. But, last night was a lot different. Last night my husband went in and put her back in bed. He left her room and she was quiet. That was around 8:15. Then around 9:30 I went in to check on her and couldn't get her door open. She had gotten back out of bed and sat against the wall next to her door and fell asleep sitting up. Her legs were blocking the door. I had to use the door to nudge her awake so that I could get her back in bed. After that she was up all night and so was I. She would not stay in bed at all. I tried making her a pallet on the floor in my room and she just lied there for over an hour eyes wide open. So, I put her back in her bed. She asked for the door to be left open. I agreed but told her she has to stay in bed or the door will be closed. This time I left the door open just a crack. I don't know what time she got up next I just know she did. I don't even know exactly how many times she got out of bed. I stopped counting and stopped looking at the clock. Until about 4:30 this morning. I had enough. I grabbed her and put her back in bed without a word from my mouth. I was livid. Then around 6:15 I went in to wake her to get her ready for the sitter. She was so exhausted and wouldn't let me put her down. I don't know what else to do to get her to stay in bed. I've tried the treats. That worked for about 2 weeks. I don't want her losing sleep like that anymore. And I can't afford to lose it either. I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and loss of sleep makes my sugars spike very high the next day. What else can I do?...See MoreDo I need to strip my 12 year old deck to restain it
Comments (5)Well I am done stripping / cleaning it. I sprayed the areas that still had a solid color of the old stain with the stripper and then used a power washer to strip it off. Then I sprayed the deck with the brightner and power washed it clean. Some areas that were still left or areas i could not reach with the sprayer I sanded the next day. It went pretty smooth. I was not looking for perfection as the deck is 15 years old and some boards are splintery and splitting. I just wanted to get it looking good for a while longer and maybe in 5 more years replace the decking and railings with composit decking (quote for that this year was $16,000). The deck support is in great condition. Maybe in 5 years I will look into ipe or something? Wish I could do that work myself, i think material would be about $4000, that I can handle, $16k i cannot....See Moreanita9
