30-year-old Craftsman won't start
Comments (8)Thanks, Bill, for the link and the advice. The air filter on my mower is a cyclinder-type that clips on in the front and is connected by a hose. I don't think it's ever gotten any oil on it, but removing it is easy so I tried that w/o success. BTW, my old spark plug was a mess, so I replaced it. But I can see how the condenser and/or points could also be a mess. Ironically, I was in a mower store when a guy with an 18-year-old Craftsman came in to buy (I think) a condenser, probably not the same as mine, but it cost him $40. I'll have to decide if I can replace condenser and points and find out what the parts cost. Cleaning the carburetor sounds like a logical and cheap step, and something I should do anyway. Your manual shows lots of different carbs. I haven't pinned down which exactly I have (my parts list says it's "Carburetor No. 631619"). I don't see a brass nut, but in the exploded parts view in my parts list it looks like a very simple carb. So maybe I can do something with it. In the meantime I went ahead and bought a new mower, a Lawn Boy 10685. But I'm going to hold onto my 30-year-old Craftman, if for no other reason than nostalgia and its excellent lightweight magnesium alloy deck that looks as good as new. Replacing the engine altogether as someone else suggested is also an option, but now that I have a new mower I'm not in a hurry to try that. I've printed out the advice I've gotten here and downloaded that PDF manual. Thanks again!...See MoreKawasaki 12.5 hp won't start after changing crankcase cvr gasket
Comments (10)I was out of town a couple of days and haven't been able to respond. Thanks for your response. I tried to be very careful not to turn or move anything. I did not check the timing marks when I put the cover back on, I only focused on getting the plastic governor gear meshed properly. I don't even know where the timing marks are. Considering that it won't even try to start, gets a good spark, and after pulling the cord numerous times gas will be visible in the carb cover around the choke plate, along with an occasional backfire, it does sound like the timing is off. Do you have any advice on setting the timing or maybe a website that might help? Obviously, I'm not an expert mechanic and hate to remove the engine again, but it looks like that's where I'm headed. Thanks again....See MoreWhat to do with my 12 year old?
Comments (4)Talk to your family doctor and/or your child's pediatrician. Get a referral to a family counselor whose has expertise with adolescent and step family issues. Basically, if you have a situation where he needs help and things you've reasonably tried and which should normally work have not been effective, then it's a good time to consult and work with outside experts to get some fresh insights. The reason to get family counseling too, and not just single out the 12 year old even though it seems like he is clearly the focus, is so that the family dynamic can be altered in such a way that your 12 year old _can_ change his patterns. Otherwise, even if he does get good therapy (counseling, cognitive behavioral, or whatever) and can change himself, the force of the family dynamic can keep things from changing... so that counseling never seems to work even when it would have been effective. You might want to also discuss the possibility of neurological problems with his pediatrician. Try to find out if there are any diagnosable problems that would need their own special attention... ADHD/ADD, cognitive or mood disorders, learning disabilities of any kind, or anything else. If there is a probability that something of this kind is coexisting in him with the present conduct problems, then he might be better served by a child psychiatrist who has expertise with adolescents, than by a child counselor. You can also schedule a meeting with his teacher or teachers. Ask them how they view your son's academic performance and how they view his facility or lack with social skills, and general coordination issues. Ask them for their opinions, and why they think and feel the way they do if they would be kind enough to recommend anything that could help. Teachers are usually not doctors, or counselors so the teacher may or may not be greatly helpful. But, as an adult in your child's life who has worked with him and who have opportunities to observe him, any of his teachers can be a good source of additional information you can use. Adolescence is complicated. People want the feeling of independence and respect (parents, and children both). Parents have usually been able to 'force' it if it was not naturally forthcoming. Adolescence is a time when the children are beginning to have the developmental ability to both say, and mean 'no.' Granted, they have no experience and they can use words and phrases involving hatred, or worse. The parental tendency is to try to use what worked before 'force' and that tends to reinforce an already ugly situation when there is conflict. (Family counseling, aside from any individual work can help you learn new ways to manage family conflicts in a more communicative manner with less animosity.) seriously, get professional support and help because although this kind of thing can be normal and helpable through counseling and learning new ways to manage stress and conflicts it can also be the case that the child has problems which require more specialized help so that he can be able to function more effectively...See More3 year old won't stay in bed at bedtime
Comments (15)Okay. I'm in the same boat. My daughter is almost 3 and has been in a twin bed for 3 months. There are nights that she does pretty well with staying in bed. I assume it's from being so tired. And there are nights when I have to go back in about 2 or 3 times within the hour. But, last night was the worst. I don't think she slept at all. We did the usual routine - bath, stories, prayer, lights out (except for night light). I won't leave the door open at all cuz I know she will come out for sure. Usually she will get up and just sit against the wall next to her door and cry. Then, I or my husband will go in and put her back in bed. We usually ask if something scared or or ask what is wrong. She never answers. But, last night was a lot different. Last night my husband went in and put her back in bed. He left her room and she was quiet. That was around 8:15. Then around 9:30 I went in to check on her and couldn't get her door open. She had gotten back out of bed and sat against the wall next to her door and fell asleep sitting up. Her legs were blocking the door. I had to use the door to nudge her awake so that I could get her back in bed. After that she was up all night and so was I. She would not stay in bed at all. I tried making her a pallet on the floor in my room and she just lied there for over an hour eyes wide open. So, I put her back in her bed. She asked for the door to be left open. I agreed but told her she has to stay in bed or the door will be closed. This time I left the door open just a crack. I don't know what time she got up next I just know she did. I don't even know exactly how many times she got out of bed. I stopped counting and stopped looking at the clock. Until about 4:30 this morning. I had enough. I grabbed her and put her back in bed without a word from my mouth. I was livid. Then around 6:15 I went in to wake her to get her ready for the sitter. She was so exhausted and wouldn't let me put her down. I don't know what else to do to get her to stay in bed. I've tried the treats. That worked for about 2 weeks. I don't want her losing sleep like that anymore. And I can't afford to lose it either. I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and loss of sleep makes my sugars spike very high the next day. What else can I do?...See Moreanita9
