Material or web sites for vocabulary improvement

I am looking for recommendations for workbooks or websites that help improve vocabulary. Primarily for my 4th grader, it would be good if it included material for my 8th grade student also.

I don't have a specific website, but the more they read, the better their vocabulary will be. Also, the more varied types of materials they read the better their vocabulary. Do they like to read? Could you help guide them to read some fiction, some poetry, some non-fiction, etc? Also, get them a good student dictionary so they can look up unfamiliar words as they read.

I agree with Momma Bird. The more they read, the better their vocabulary. Luckily my kids LOVE to read. Does your local library offer a summer reading program?

How in depth is the reading your kids are doing in school? There's a test my kids take regularly at school (they have an excellent reading program, each child in the primary grades goes to reading class for 45 minutes every day). The test is called Scholastic Reading Inventory. It graded the child according to the grade level the child is on. For example, a 4th grader reading on grade level would have a grade equivalency of 4.2 (4th grade, second semester). Their reading classes are with other children (aged the same) who are reading at the same level.

I'd also check with my teachers (school's not out here yet). My 4th grader took part in the UIL Spelling contest & she was given a list of words that had previously been on the test to study. Maybe a list from a spelling bee if something like UIL is not available.

Make up some fun games related to words. When we go on long car trips and see a billboard or other signs, we use the words there to see how many words we can use from them. Like Anagrams.

I just did a quick google search & came up with bunches of sites - I searched for vocabulary help.

My family and I operate a tiny market garden where we use both organic and biointensive garden methods. We have added OM to our planting beds via our own compost, green manures, decaying plant matter, and mulches like straw and hay. We have not added peat or sand and, up until just a few weeks ago, we had not added any soil amendments either. 2012 is only our second year of raising crops and already we see the great benefits of adding OM. Our double dug raised beds have a much improved tilth, water is more easily absorb (this time last year the soil's surface would become so compacted that water would just run off), water drainage within the bed has improved, we've seen many earthworms where there was nothing before, and the winter weeds that were just removed last week had very deep root systems. In 2010 our garden area was an overgrown mess of pines, young hardwood, brambles, wild privet, honeysuckle, kudzu, and lots of other nasty stuff we didn't want or need. We had two acres cleared with a track hoe. Unfortunately, we lost all the topsoil and the ground became very compacted from the weight of the track hoe. We literally had to use picks to break the soil for our first six 3'x50' planting beds. It was awful, but we were determined, and now we reap the benefits of that determination. We will not spend time and money on any type of soil conditioner but will instead learn more about building our soil through proper composting, planting green manures & cover crops, mulching, and adding natural soil amendments such as alfalfa and kelp meals. ibuzzard - yes, constantly adding organic matter after harvest before the next crop. To speed things up bring in a lot of organic matter as manure + bedding to compost in piles set aside from the current gardening beds. Then after harvest rake those on to the beds if you let some lay fallow or put what is crumbling & dark brown on beds you plan to replant right away. It takes awhile to build enough compost to cover all the beds at all times, but with diligence you can do it. The small animal manures like chicken & rabbits are potent, but not the quantity you'd need. Get a hold of some horse manures and you'll be able to speed up the process. Ten years of using chicken, duck & rabbit manures from our backyard animals (Plus liberal amounts of used coffee grounds + shredded leaves mown over on the lawn in fall. Plus our kitchen waste compost bin contents.)... didn't up the soil organic matter content as much as when we started adding horse manure as well composting first in piles or spreading in fall on fallow beds. Volume made a huge difference though I was quite skeptical in the beginning, afraid of weeds & then learned about the herbicide residue in some hay fed to livestock. I made sure we used manure from horses fed alfalfa hay instead. Now after at least 3 years of horse manures we no longer need 6-12 inches of it added in the fall to break down. The soil is light, fluffy and diggable with hands rather than pickaxe like before.

I will admit that I have not been here much lately because some of us would like a slit where one site would focus oon total garden material such as landscaping and leaning more towards plants and not vegetable gardening. The other site would be for vegetable gardening in Florida. I would like to see the logo plant changed to reflect a more modern look to the page. I would personally like being able to have my picture be posted as part of my name so that when I post people can see what I look like along with my name. I sincerely like HTML capabilities along with the back archives that go back at least a minimum f ten years. I would like the capability of placing a picture of a plant I am seeking to match with one in question in a sise by side comparison so that the person seeling an ID can see what we are referring to without having to give a link. There are more suggestions but I am too tired to think at the moment. I would like Thanks for the improvements thus far.

dadoes I think you hit the nail on the head with "the function is there to be seen if one looks in the right place". We as users of this site have no clue of what changes to look for. Where are the "right places"? It's like hide and seek...the webmaster of this site knows of the changes that they made but we as the users don't even know where to begin looking for ANY changes. I did notice the camera icons first but that only gave a hint that the thread may have some photos in it. The option to upload photos must have been a recently added option because it wasn't there when the camera icons popped up out of no where. It's NOT at all obvious when you look at this site through the eyes of the user as compared to the site developer/webmaster that is making the changes. Hey,gwAnnouncements let us in on these changes so we can use the site more efficiently...please.
