My color pallet is black and white

I hope someone can help me..
I just got a new computer and have to start over with everything. I have Vista now.. My 5 dlls loaded.
the problem I have is that when I pick my colors and try to use gradient the only color I get is black and white.
I'm sure this is probably a simple setting somewhere.
Can someone help me?
