Help! scanning to email,how to

Am running AOL9.0 SE,with W-XP on a HPScanjet 3400c.
What is the procedure to email these pics to the receiver,directly from the scanner? (has the email button)
Do I have to be online or what? Or do I send them to some kind of folder?
Never have done this before,so I`m totally lost!

I'm not familiar with AOL but when I scan pictures I usually save them to a folder in my documents and then put them in an email from that folder. Maybe someone else will come along with another idea.
