Yeah, I don't know why I dont' have any weeds. It's odd... I guess maybe because I put the compost down and then seeded into the compost? The reason the backyard and side are not looking as good as the front yard is because they didn't get a smuch water. I had serious water issues in the beginning of this endeavor so I focused on the front yard, mainly because 1) it's the largest portion of myard (my front yard is around 10,000 feet vs. the backyard at around 5,000) and also the first thing people see. I have been focusing more on the back recently and it actually is starting to look better. The side strip i put the least effort in because it is the biggest waste of water as the sprinkler arcs send a lot of water past the strip, so I only watered that when I had decent pressure and was able to. I am focusing on it more now, though. I think the fertilizer really kicked things in, too, it looks a lot better today (36 hours after fertilizing) than it did 36 hours ago.

Temps in my hoophouses on the coldest night this year, 10.9 outside, was around 23 in my biggest house (temp not taken under the row cover). The smaller houses it was 18-20 degrees. I drain all my hoses, but I never worry about the drip tape and header lines. It will warm up in the 60's or hotter during the day. The drip tape usually drains out. What crops am I growing now in the high tunnels. Carrots, Leeks, Radishes, Turnips, Spinach, Napa Cabbage, Bok Choy, Tatsoi, Kale, Green onions, Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Arugula, and Tomatoes (with a little added heat up to Thanksgiving). There are many more, but this is what I currently have growing. There are several reasons: 1)I planted the trays very quickly and just pinched a few seeds in each plug. I usually only put 2 seeds per hole. I was in a hurry. 2) Why did I plant two plugs at each dripper? Space. I had more seedlings than I had space. So, I just put them in. The will start being harvested in January. 3) I don't harvest full heads. This will go into salad mix. I break off the bigger leaves and leave the plants. I get good grow back and I can harvest for a longer period of time from the same space. I don't thickly sow salad mix and cut baby salad mix for several reason, weeds, are the main reason. Also it takes more space to do this than if I do it this way. I tested that out last year. I grow onions in my high tunnels in the winter, but they are in pipe/gutter planters. Very simple and a good use of space. IMO. Jay

Interesting data. I don't have any "official" data, but I noticed my Burpee Jalapeno M were some of the first to pop up. They aren't the early ones per say, but they are usually the first variety that produces ripe fruit for me. Probably around 8 days if I had to guess to pop up(based on the 4-5 days it took for the 'maters). California Wonder, Big Dipper, and Chianti were about a day later. Anaheim were a little slower for some reason. Corno di Toro never germinated at all, as you know.

Day 33 Wall tile went up yesterday....and my beautiful blue paint...does not work with it. The blue wall looks like an orphan, unwanted and unrelated to anything. As my mother would have said "damn blast and thunderation". The blue in the accent tile is quite dark, and I don't think I want to have a dark navy bathroom. Sigh. Back to the sludge palette. So off to my local Home Hardware to the resident paint guru. Of course when I got there I only had a sample of the wall tile, so home I trudged again to get the wall and accent tiles, and back into town. Mme guru short listed 3 tones for me as that is the range of choice I can cope with. " How much to you need" " Undoubtedly one quart plus a tablespoon so I had better get a gallon". Handyman Dave (HD) was hard at work when I got back, so I didn't have a chance to paint before the floor started to go in. Good thing last night I had painted sealer on the travertine squares in the accent tile with an iddy biddy 10 hair brush, as the floor is down now so I can't do anything this evening. My the floor is a rich colour. Things are starting to pull together, and even without my blue I think I am really going to like it. The piles of tiles is diminished, although the piles of garbage and detritus are not. I can now manoeuver through the upstairs hallway, and only have to clamber over the piles of tile bits and cardboard boxes piled by the door. Tomorrow is grout time. The end is near, the end is near. and I can always stick in a few accessories to highlight the blue.
