When choosing a high resolution scanner, look for ones with the most robust drive for the scanning head. The scanning head often is driven by a stepper motor, thus the drive motion is not smooth, but a series of jerks. If the scanner head is not well supported, its induced vibration will reduce its capability to produce sharp pixels. A shaking scanner head can not produce fine detail. Over 10 years ago, I bought an HP flat bed scanner. Its scanner head slides on large polished rods and the drive belt was more robust than other offerings at that time. It has performed well and I still use it. I wish that updated software and drivers were available for it.

alisande, you may be stuck in a never-never land of old hardware that doesn't run with newer versions of software or operating systems. Unless you're able to run the gauntlet of Canon and Microsoft forums or tech support, or know someone with experience jury-rigging old drivers and old hardware with new other things. A solution may require the purchase of a newer scanner that doesn't use TWAIN. I discarded a TWAIN-using scanner at least 5 years ago, the new PC I got at the time resisted all my efforts to make them work together. I didn't think TWAIN remained a supported or used protocol anymore but I guess it does to some extent.

Need a scanner I can take with me to relatives house and scan their photos to print later. I have a Flip-Pal scanner but it scans all the way across instead of just the picture and I have to edit each picture and crop. Time consuming when I have a bunch to do. Any recommendations on another scanner that would work for me?
