How to make a transparent background

| I'm a "basic" user of Photoshop. I'm redesigning my business website and I found a few graphics that would be perfect for the header page. Problem is, they have white backgrounds. I've tried extracting the photo to clean up the white background, but it always leaves white around the edges of the graphic (& some graphics are intricate), not getting close enough to add the "cleaned-up" graphic to my colored header page.
Does anyone know a program out there that makes any background transparent so none of the white shows? Some graphics are just too tedious to do by hand in PhotoShop and they never come out right anyway.
The website builder I'm using only accepts JPEG or GIF files.
Thanks. |

Sorry debi, I just seen this now but I think PSP does that too when I am saving as a gif. Saving as jpg doesn't do that. |

Is the problem that all the white isn't being deleted, or it's not all "white." Use the magic wand or other method to select everything you want to remove, and press delete. If this leaves a white halo around the image, it's because the halo pixels aren't being selected. You may need to adjust the tolerance of the magic wand tool. You can also try changing the background color to match the web site background, rather than making the image transparent. hope that gives you some ideas. |
