Illustrator overlapping shadows?

I keep getting these overlapping shadows when I'm using illustrator as I add on to the design. It's like an overlay or something. How do I get rid of them?

Are you sure that this isn't just a screen effect, something that does not show up in the printed work?

If you are working in layers it may be using the shadow to show you where the layers are overlapping. Once you flatten the image the shadows would go away.
