Is there an easier way?

Have you ever had to search for a font by opening up each one to see it?

I decided to make a file showing what each looked like for me to find and WOWIE, it takes forever to do it this way.

Here is an example of what I started and had to come up for air! :)

Any of you have an easier way?

You're braver than me. I had a font viewer before I reloaded my computer and I don't have that back on here yet.

The fissured, flaking bark on very old bonsai trees is precious to the illusion or the confirmation of great age in the tree. It is very difficult to repot 4-hand (large trees that take 4 hands [2 people] to move about) bonsai w/o using the base of the trunk or the lower branches as a handle or a place to grip the tree as you work. Often, we hang these large trees by a rope attached to the upper branches so we can work on them w/o even touching the valued old bark. While you don't need to take such extreme measures to guard against knocking a few pieces of bark from the tree, you CAN employ the hanging method. Cut back the bush, hang the rose from the base at a comfortable ht to work on, use a saw to remove the bottom 1/3 - 1/2 of the roots & then bare-root/repot into (very often) the same container it came from. Diane, I don't buy the kind with the little holes perforated in it because my experience with it was exactly the same as yours. I spend bigger bucks (and, yes, it is painful to spend the money on it, but the hours of weeding that I don't have to do makes it worth it) on a woven landscape fabric that does not have those little perforations in it. It is slightly thicker than that stuff, but almost looks like felt...doesn't feel like felt, but looks like it. I buy it in big rolls at CostCo....I think the roll is 4' x 200'. I buy two rolls a year most years, so every bed doesn't get it and every bed doesn't get new fabric every year. By recycling it into pathways after I take it off of a bed, I get about 5 years usage from it, so that's not too bad. If you let them, weeds still can grow underneath it or on top of it, but I yank them out before they get that well-established. The woven type is 10,000% better than the perforated type. I generally use the landscape fabric in beds that have tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, squash and melons. I don't use it in beds that have carrots, beans, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, etc. because I'd die of old age before I could cut all the little X's to plant through. I've done corn both ways. Last year I didn't use landscape fabric in the corn bed, and had to fight horrendous amounts of bindweed. This year, I used it, which explains why it took me 5 years to get all the corn planted but I've barely seen any bindweed so far. The landscape fabric we use works great as long as you don't let anything grow up through it from below or down through it from above, because once the roots penetrate that fabric, they're really hard to get out. In the year that I used that landscape fabric stuff Wal-Mart and other places sell that's perforated with holes "to allow the water to flow through", it was like using nothing at all even though I had mulch on top of it. That had to be one of the most useless gardening products I've ever purchased. Oddly, I don't use landscape fabric in my flower beds, which many people do, because so many of my plants reseed (and I want them to). The downside to that is that I have to fight some sort of grassy weed--I believe it is love grass--all year long. You can come move in here if you want, but our quiet little household probably would bore you to death in about 5 minutes. : ) As long as I do a good job of weeding in spring, summers around here are quiet and relatively easy. I grow my plants biointensively, so once they're large enough that their leaves are touching those of the next closest plant, I don't see many weeds sprouting because of the shade the plants provide (and the landscape fabric/mulch combo). Thought I'd include some information for those who have quartzite--a natural stone (not to be confused with man-made quartz products such as Caeserstone, etc.), or granite that has etched. Our fabricator tested oil/ketchup/wine prior to installation of our quartzite (which looks like marble but is supposedly more durable) and no etching. Didn't think to test for water etching, which is does :(. But, a poultice of baking soda takes them out if you're looking for a non-acidic way to remove etching!

Yes, there are two ways. 1. A toner. This is finish with color in it. To be successful, it almost has to be sprayed and it has to go on lightly. Goes from not quite to too much real quickly. Technically, Polyshades is a toner, though it is miserable stuff. A friend calls it the worst thing to happen to a can. In addition, poly does not stick all that well to lacquer, the most common commercial finish. You can get lacquer-based aerosol toners from places that cater to professional finishers and touch up techs. Mohawk is the most common brand. 2. Glaze. A glaze is a heavy on pigment, light on binder colorant that you apply between layers of finish. You must top coat it with a clear coat. I often use glazes to adjust colors in the finishing process (a little darker, a little more/less red, etc.). I also use glazes as "hang up glazes" to give an overall highlight and darken crevices, making the piece appear not "sparkling new." I make or buy glazes, but some people use gel stains as a glaze substitute. It's also important to not go too heavy with a glaze because besides muddying up, too thick a layer can cause adhesion problems. I use both of these products to kick colors in certain directions. Thanks Teri, I just installed it after running a virus and anti spyware scan it came up clean and it looks like a great program.

Free&Easy Fonts Viewer has its limitations, though: if you have a collection of fonts which are located in a different folder from the system fonts, you won't be able to browse through them using this tool.

The fonts I have are in a different folder so that will not work for me.

I use Xfonter. It will show the fonts in any directory. I browse it then open the font I want then open PSP or whatever program I want to use the fonts in.

It works well.

Urlee, the font viewer I use isn't free but I've found it to be worth the $35 I paid for it, to me, anyway. It does have a free trial period. You can check it out at the link below.

It has 8 different ways to print font samples, 80 per page, 40, 20, 6 and 4 different 1 per page setups (the last 2 are Character set with key code and Keyboard layout).

One thing I really like is the icon in the system tray where I can access folders of uninstalled fonts to make them available for use in programs. Couple of clicks and all my Christmas fonts are available to use in PSP.

I don't use nearly all the features it has but I really like the ones I do use. I need to get into it and get my fonts better organized. I keep thinking I'll print off 1 or 2 pages at a time and build my font reference binder but haven't done it yet.

Also, if you just want to see what the fonts look like in PSP you can create your text with the text tool, make sure the text is selected in the dialog box, click in the font selection box on the Tool Options ribbon and use the arrow keys to go thru the list. The text changes to each font as you move thru the list, just make sure the dialog box is out of the way so you can see the text in the image. Works in 8, 9 & X. In 7 the sample text (next to the font size) within the dialog box changes, not as good as seeing the text in the image change but better than nothing.

Yep, a registration key to register the download for continued use. No disk. Which reminds me, have I burned the program to CD? Gotta check.

By the time I get ALL my fonts printed out, I'd probably have to ship it by freight. LOL

If you're fast, maybe you can get all yours printed out before the trial expires.

I downloaded "The Font Thing" program (free) a year or two ago and it's great. I forget where I downloaded from but I'll check my bookmarks. When you open the program, your font file list opens on the left side and you can view each font just by going down the list. Much faster than opening the file folders one by one.

Jill, I just downloaded the font program you listed. I sure hope I can figure out how to use it...Thanks
I definitely get tired of looking through all of the fonts when I do something...which of course right now is "nothing" but soon..I hope.

Hi Bev,

If you have your extra fonts sorted into folders by type you can view only the fonts in one (or more) folders. Really helps when you know what kind of font you want, just not sure exactly which one. You can see all of one type together.

Another tip, you can change the sample text that displays with the Options button. Makes it easy to see how your words will look in each font.

If you use the Font Groups in Typograf (Font Management button) you can have an icon in the system tray which lets you activate and deactivate groups of fonts with a click, don't even have to open Typograf. If I want to use a fat font I can activate the Fat font group and Presto! all the fat fonts I put in that group show up in PSP's font list. Another click to deactivate that group.

Some nifty stuff in this program.

I have a question on this program..When I look at some of the fonts, there are some that are repeated 2 or 3 times. Can I delete them, or will that cause a problem.
