Photoshop border question

I used Photoshop 5.5 to create a magnet for my school last year. Need to update it this year and it's almost finished, except that I want to put a solid black border around it and cannot for the life of me get anything but a gradient. I dragged the select tool around the outside, went to Select, Modify, Border, typed in the size, clicked the background color (black) and selected black on the palette. When I click the paint bucket, it pours a gradient around it. The kicker is that I put a solid black border around it last year - didn't even know you could do a gradient border! I don't use PhotoShop very often, but need an EPS file. I know 5.5 is old, too, but my school will get a newer version next year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry about that Virginia,
Everyone must be out doing their Spring cleaning?

I use PSP7 & 8 and it works with a click of the button.
No need to drag and pour.

That's OK, Urlee. Our URL is changing next year, so I'm on hold until we find out what it will be; otherwise, we'd just have to redirect. Last year, I think I changed the canvas color to black - or maybe created a new document with a black canvas - then copied it. I'm going to try to recreate that. Thanks!

Okay, then! I have two or three color schemes I'd like to try out, but I think I need to take a pic of the house that also shows my neighbors' houses. Even though all of the houses are old and there is a variety of color, I'd hate to paint something that looks horrible next to the neighbors'! My one neighbor just repainted, so I know the house will stay that color. Pretty sure the other one will stay the same, too. Anyway, I'll probably post back later today or tomorrow. Thanks again!!!

I'm not Oceanna, but what I do is either cut out the accessories and then paste them back on. OR I erase whatever portion of the painting would be in front of the accesories. Hope that made sense.

Yes, it's all cut & paste, blur and tone. The best way to learn is to just pull in your picture and play with the tools to see what they do. It does take quite a bit of time and will look rough at first, but just keep plugging along. I discover new things all the time. Remember 'Undo.' : ) I was out looking for the download the other day, and it seemed that the trial for Adobe PS Elements 7.0 (their inexp home version) is due out in a few weeks. Wondering which one you got. There are also some free photo editing programs around. Someone recommended GIMP the other day. I use MS Digital Imaging Suite, which has been discontinued. There are millions of stores and photos across the web to find things. You can also scan pictures in from books, magazines, catalogues. I actually do a lot of custom work! Carpentry, masonry, even furniture and accessories : ) I also have my own paint line ; ) H'Aint Paint custom squirrel-y mixes. If only shopping and home improvements were this easy.
