I don't know anything about Balsam, but this message has been on the Hybridizing Forum for two months so here is a little information. This page has a link to a 1958 article in PDF format on hybridizing Impatiens balsamina to get various floral colors. It looks like balsam flower color genetics can be fairly complicated. The table lists parent colors in the first column, the F1 color in the second column, genes in the third colum, and F2 colors in the fourth column. In crosses numbered 21 and 22 they got purple by crossing pink with either lavender or nearly-white lavender. Color descriptions may vary so you may need to experiment to compare to their descriptions.

In terms of how I grow them. Mimimum temps - 16oC. Maximum temps - 31oC. Humidity above 60%. Quite bright light for Paphs. The leaves on mine tend to be a light green colour rather than a deep green. i find them easier to flower with brighter light plus it tends to keep them a little more compact in size. Regular fertiliser (once a week) at half stength. I think with these multi-florals, unless you are a great grower (which I'm not yet), it is best to purchase as large as plant as you can afford. Small plants take forever to mature even when grown well. Large plants are much easier to grow than small seedlings. They might be expensive but at least you can be fairly confident of keeping them alive. David

Was the pattern for knit slippers that had the crochet edging, or were they all crochet? You can always add a crochet edge of double crochet, or half double crochet row around for the ribbon, and even add a single crochet, or crab stitch row to finish it off.
