Well, one sister died before I could visit her. She was not the one we thought would go first...but had many good phone calls with her. I was able to visit the other. Full family wants to get together in a month or two for a full memorial for the sister who died. Unfortunately, I'll be in the middle of my recovery time for my surgery, so I may not be able to make it out of state to be there. (3 planes to get from Fargo to that area of Florida.) My surgery is in one week, and I am busy trying to ready the house (and me) for recovery. So much to do -- just have to bite off one thing at a time. Hopefully I'll be able to return to work (at least part time) by March. A comfort in my sister's passing is that she was not in pain due to the brain cancer. Her body functions just began malfunctioning and that was it. The other sister with ovarian cancer is not having that easy of a time, therefore the visit with her was not pleasant -- she is very bitter and surly. I'm hoping it is only her meds talking. It is draining to be around her. I'm making a mental note to be kind to all my nurses and doctors - no matter how I feel. I'm just glad I'll be in good hands. I'll keep you all posted.

A color challenge from someone who is color challenged!

Did you look at BM historical colors? Have you looked in your closet for colors that you feel good about and get compliments when you wear them? Another direction would be to just work with lighter and darker variations of the gray you're already happy with. What other shades are on that color strip card? Most decorating projects end with the paint selection because it can be custom blended to work with your fabrics and textiles which are set in stone. Best way to test colors in a room is to paint a large square of each color you're considering in the center of a big white poster boards. That way you can move each color from wall to wall to see how they change with the different lighting effects including rainy days, sunny days, night, with your lighting, etc.

You have a lot of different things going on. Because the spot it directly in front of the house (as viewed from the street) I'd be inclined to simplify the area and calm it down. And keep it low. So low, sun tolerant groundcover would be my choice. Within that category, there's be options on height and character, dependent, of course, on what the conditions are offering. It could be 1' high, 3' high or in between, depending on what you choose. But groundcover will automatically limit the height whereas shrub masses usually keep getting forever taller.

Stair and loft railing challenge - how to update?

The dark wood seems to be in keeping with the rest of the house, but the loft railing would look better if it weren't surrounded by drywall. It should be all drywall or a railing, not both. The way it is now it looks like a jail cell. Only do the horizontal railing like ffpalms shows if your decor is contemporary. If you like all the dark wood you have, do something more like the below, but if you use iron balusters, I would do plain ones, or alternate plain with ornamented ones to simplify the pattern.

Here's my second, practicing at animation. As you can see need lots more practice. I forgot to sharpen the hand. Still needs work, but having lots of fun and learning.

Thanks Urlee, once I start I have to keep on going or I forget how. Doesn't take much anymore, the old brain has to stay on one thing over and over so I don't forget it. Actually that is one of the problems I have. I see a tut that I just love, work like crazy till I get it right, then go on to something else and forget everything I learned. I'll just keep on practicing.
