Black n White Photo w/one or two colored objects

Hi Everyone,

Would some kind soul tell me how to take a picture and make it black and white with one or two objects in the picture colored? I have: PSP 7, Picture It Express, Lexmark Photo Center, Paint, and IrfranView. PSP 7 and IrfranView I really haven't used much so knowledge is very little. I need EASY instructions please. Thank you for your time.

There are so many ways of doing it but I will write JOY'S instructions here.

Open photo
Shift-key plus D .....makes a duplicate (close original)
Duplicate the background layer on Layer palette
On copy of background....use Greyscale
The background layer is already colored....start erasing.

Funny thing?
That works in PSP9 but not in PSP7 for me?

In PSP7, I went up to COLORS, COLORIZE, and have the Hue & Saturation at O!

I just voted. I was getting cross-eyed--I've looked at these pics so many times. I liked so many of them.I wanted to vote for one where someone had tried a new technique.I wanted to vote for one with beautiful quilting (I'm weak in that area and I envy anyone that can do it ),I wanted to vote for one that appealed to me visually. I even wound up giving each one points for different aspects--detail, originality, visual appeal,etc. Then last night I thought, well, if I was given a choice of keeping one for myself--which would I choose? Made up my mind, went to vote and changed my mind again. LOL. I wish I could have had at least three votes!! Anyway, I've voted. I just wanted to say that this has been really enjoyable and if there's another challenge I'll join in. Everyone did such a great job. Clap yourselves on the back. ~Geraldine

I like both but do favor the lighter for now. I thought about herringbone but decided on brick lay as you see from my pic. I chose that bc I also picked a tonal tile with 3 shades for texture & interest wo being too busy (see pic) & chose grout to match tile not counter. My tile is 2 1/2” x 5”, Ztile Melange, Green Tea color. Looks gray! My advice to pass along on picking BS is to ”wait until the countertops are installed”! I’m so glad I did. I .read that over & over from Houzz Pros too. I took the advice to heart bc the person at countertop company told me to just wait! I had narrowed my choice down to 2, which it looks like you have done. Once tops were in I did a 180 change on BS tile I’d decided on & went with my second choice. And I was looking at multiple pieces of the 2 tiles to get a better idea. A surprise to me for sure that I changed. All of those whose opinions I’d solicited also seemed amazed at difference in look sitting on top of new counter. And, I solicited opinions from every trades person in my kitchen as well as friends & neighbors! 99% of them changed their pick after counters in too. Reason is that until counter is in, you’re looking at a small sample and a huge vertical slab. Light hits the counter very differently on the horizontal & in your home light. The BS tile as well. So, make sure both of your picks are available on quick turnaround & just wait. BTW, at this point, my pick for you is lighter tile Bc I Like it better with darker cabinets & tile will be right next to cabinet color next to frig. When I look at BS my eye goes down not up so I see base cabs more. Love your counter & cab together.

Kolbe Forgent black exterior windows have several white interior options: 1) white Glastra, 2) white factory painted wood, and 3) primed wood. They are also available in several wood species in case you want to stain them. Their wood interiors are an over-layment that attaches to the fiberglass interior, so the wood is not exposed to the elements outside. I just installed black exterior/white wood interior windows 6 months ago and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them and would make the same purchase again. The Glastra window frames themselves only come in two colors: white and tan (Sahara). Then, if you want black or bronze, they paint a very nice and durable coating over the white or tan Glastra/fiberglass window frames. On the outside, the entire frame is coated. On the inside, there is a portion of the frame that is uncoated, so you will see a difference between the bronze/black and the white or tan frame. (I am speaking only about casement windows and can't speak to what they do on other window types.) See photos below.

That particular picture was taken in 2016. It is now a towering beast of a tree, however, it has been substantially pruned upwards. When we planted that tree (river birch) it was our thoughts that it would make a lovely ornamental specimen. Wrong! Nothing ornamental about it now. At almost 25-30 feet it has become a source of shade for our house and our neighbors garage area. Every time I mention removing it my neighbor starts praying that I’ll change my mind-not even kidding here. She absolutely loves that tree (definitely more than me). Doesn’t matter that during the summer it will go into heat stress and start dropping a ton of leaves in both our yards. Thank goodness for her uncaring attitude…she’s a real sweetheart! If our roles were reversed I’m afraid I would not have been so lenient. 🫣

Yes, like that. So I need to change my photo to black and white and "save as" someplace on my computer. Then you are suggesting I use PSP 7 to do this, right? I am confused now with the instructions, would you mind starting from the beginning again? Thanks.

Sapphires- open your picture in #7 and then Shift-key plus D .....makes a duplicate (close original)
Duplicate the background layer on Layer palette
On copy of background go to COLORS, COLORIZE, and have the Hue & Saturation at O
The background layer is already colored....start erasing.

Hi all....there are lots of ways....my way...quick and easy.

Make color corrections etc. on your inage, then....
Duplicate the Background layer.

On Copy of Background
Hue/Saturation/Lightness...click Reset > enable Colorize > OK
OR....
Channel Mixer:
Enable Monochrome
Settings > Red/Green/Blue 33 > Contrast 3%
If you want it lighter
Settings > Red 87 > Green Minus 12 > Blue 61 > Contrast Minus 3%

Stay on top layer...
To show background color:
*Erase: use left mouse button to erase and right button to make corrections (un-erase).
Settings > brush size will vary > Hardness 50 or less > Step 5 > Density/Thickness/Opacity 100

*If you have straight lines to erase... hold down Shift key move the mouse and click again...if you have curves, click hold down shift key keep moving and clicking. If you need to UNDO, you will be able to undo small amounts at a time instead of losing a major amount of work.

Ok, I know I sound dense but what part am I erasing? Am I erasing the part I want colored or everything I don't want colored? Sorry, but I really am not good with PSP but still want to try this. Thanks.

Sorry, I should have included:
Always make a duplicate of your image, never use the original.
Shift-key plus D .....makes a duplicate (close original), then start working.

When you use 'Greyscale' you must go to Image > Increase Color Depth...you do not have any control over the shade of gray, either, I don't like to use 'Greyscale'.

Sapphires, you are erasing on the top layer (which is gray), the color will show through from the background layer. Erase on the images you want to show color.

Okay, I think I understand...yeah right lol. I have printed out the instructions you all have given me. It is now just after 11:00 pm so I will continue to try this tomorrow. Thank you all for your time, help and patience. I will let ya know what happens or be back for more help.

Hello,
Still need more help, I don't know how to erase! Where is the tool to erase? Thick, thick, thick, I tell ya I'm thick headed when it somes to PSP. After I did the steps and should be ready to erse, all I see is the white hand cursor.
