Buying Pecans in Bulk

During the holidays, DH has several friends for whom he makes wonderful spiced pecans. Right now pecans are selling for $10.99/lb (on sale $9.99) at Fred Meyer Grocery. I was curious to know if anyone buys them on-line at a better price? I googled & found there are lots of providers out there. Was hoping that someone on THS might be a better reference than justing paging thru websites. Thank you for any responses & happiest of holiday seasons.

I would think WM or maybe an Aldi Supermarket would have them for a lot less than $11 a LB. I'm sure I've seen the halves for a lot less than $5.50 an 8 OZ bag. 1 LB Priority mail is $4.05...b4 handling, confirmation, or insurance charges. I doubt if there would be any savings if they had to be shipped, unless you were really buying a large number of pounds. Sue...who has been wrong b4

Thanks Sue. I think you are probably right about the shipping. I'll look at a few of the other grocery stores to see what I might be able to find. Happy holidays.

kim0201 - I get my shelled pecans (walnuts and almonds too) from Sam's Club in 2-pound bags for around the same price you have quoted for 1-pound. We eat nuts as snack food and in homemade granola year round; and the ones we get from Sam's are consistently "fresh" tasting. -Grainlady

You do have to be careful buying pecans this time of year, though. If they're on sale really cheaply, or at a discount store, there's a good chance they're last year's crop. They're still okay to eat, but no where near as good quality as getting the current year's crop--but you will pay a much higher price for the fresher ones. I find that with pecans, it's well worth paying a little more for the fresher ones.

I think pecans are going to be really high priced this year due to the weird weather we've had. The pecan trees in my yard only produced a few pecans and they weren't very meaty.

Thank you for the responses. We don't have a Sam's Club here in Oregon, but we do have Costco which is very similar. Never thought about looking there but that's a terrific idea. Thank you all for the responses.

Look into Renfroe Pecans in Pensacola, FL. My mom has been buying pecans from them for years. They have always been wonderful. They have a website.

Sunnyland Farms, www.sunnylandfarms.com, has absolutely top quality pecans for $37.95 for 3 pounds, $53.30 for 5 pounds, or $91.65 for 10 pounds. This price includes shipping anywhere in the USA except Hawaii.

I get them at Costco. A 2 lb bag is either $9.99 or $10.99, so it's a much better deal than at the grocery store.

Thank you for all of the responses. I did shop at Costco yesterday & found them in 2 lb bags for $9.99; I was pleased w/ the $5/lb price. Now DH is in the kitchen madly making pecans. Everyone's a happy camper. Thanks again.
