Where to send soaps/shampoo?

Good afternoon,

I was wondering if anyone had a venue that accepts soaps and shampoo (the little samples you get in the room)?

Global Soap Project won't accept from individuals. I have been giving them to a local women's shelter, and disaster relief efforts. Any other places?

Here is a picture of a Stainless Shelf we built a Shampoo niche for. Notice in my picture and Bills above that the niches fit right into a tile layout. Exactly. Another one; This is not an accident and it shows forethought and helps to make a bathroom Sparkle. Your tile guy? IS he just a tile guy? Can he adjust the framing for you? Should you settle on out of square or no pitch? Their is lost to learn to this process. Bill and I make it look easy. But we both run crews. We have all the toys. All the training. Most don't. Ask this of your tile guy before he prices the job. Bill might do this just because he is picky and know how easy it is. Most are lazy. The extra 20 minutes is down time. Understand the scope of work and you must sign off on the tile lay out. Don't have a chat on Tuesday with your GC and then complain on Sunday it is not perfect. This needs to be decided in the beginning. Do you think Bill didn't know the lay out before he changed the studs? No chance. Learn more about every step. Dig deeper. Who's advice are you following? Oh yes, I am a toiletries thief. And pens and pads of paper. All types of businesses give away pads and pens to advertise themselves, I think that is unquestionable. My DH disagrees with me in re toiletries. I travel with my own preferred toiletries (travel tip, if you are really tight for space and it's a short trip, squeeze your products into a little ziploc snack bag, one for shampoo, one for conditioner, etc ... that'll keep your ounces under limit!). But I do collect hotel toiletries. I have some fabulous ones from over the years. I have a little wooden box of soaps from Le Toiny in St Barts, these things that remind me of medicine bottles from a BnB outside Barcelona, a bar of soap in a shiny emerald green plastic box that says "Hermes". I love these mementos. One disappointment is that hotels used to have their names on the soaps and bottles. In the last few years, Four Seasons for example, has gone to a combo of milk soaps and verbena soaps, all from L'Occitane in most of their properties. Lucky them, I don't take those home anymore. And I do draw the line at one set. I don't put them in my luggage to have the maid replenish to put them in again. I caught 9yo DD doing that ... apple doesn't fall very far from the tree. At home, I use them for guests, and let the kids pick a favorite to use once in a while. Some of my stuff must be 15 years old by now (am thinking of a handmade soap from a Belizean spa). I guess they have become scalps of a sort. Same thing with the airline amenity kits. I love some of the bags they come in (BA used to give one cool b/w vintage photos). Oh and tote bags, too! They are all hard earned. When we moved I finally gave up several dozen amenity kits. They are actually very useful for shelters.

Chiming in again, since I guess that I started the whole shampoo bar thing here. Before I went on the Camino last year I trialed several bars. I rather liked the Grapefruit bar from Sweetsnthings, but I had also bought a bar made by Tree Hut at a local store. It was their 4 in 1 Mango bar. I really loooooved how it made my hair feel, and it smells yummy, so that's what I took on the Camino with me, and I liked everything about it. It's got more, for want of a better word, "chemically" ingredients, more like a traditional liquid shampoo, but worked better for me than the other bars, especially since I have hard water at home, and wasn't able to do an ACV rinse on the Camino. When I returned home from Spain I went to buy some more, but discovered that it had been discontinued! I managed to find 3 bars on clearance, which I am hoarding for my next Camino walk. (this summer, yay!) But now my search was on to find a replacement. I've been usingthis one from another Etsy vendor, LakeSuperiorSoap, and it leaves my hair soft and silky. The scent is nice, but pretty strong. I have also tried this one from GetLathered on Etsy. I like it too, but not quite as much. Neither shampoo leaves any kind of residue in my hair. After shampooing I use a quick swipe of this conditioner bar through my hair to make it easier to comb, but it hasn't been that hard to comb without it. The conditioner bar has lasted forever.

Try homeless shelters. I went through mine and picked the most exotic ones and put in a huge shallow champagne glass. I stuck a flower in one side and it look nice and unusual. I set it on the basement bathroom vanity for guests to use.

I gave the rest to my niece is on a tight budget.

I think it is great that you want to donate these things instead of just pitching them, but if you can't find anyone to take them, try keeping the little bottles of shampoo in your laundry area. Great for dabbing a little on stains, expecially oily ones on placemats or napkins. Also you can rub those little soaps on stains . Shampoo is also good in soap dispensers, near the kitchen sink, mixed half and half with water, for washing your hands or even the dishes. Running your fingernails over a leftover bar of soap before gardening can make cleaning up your hands later a breeze and you don't have ridges left in the "real" bar of soap in the bathroom. I keep the little bars in the garden shed with my garden gloves :)

I do like the idea of using the samples for a more altruistic purpose

Local charities should be happy to pick them up. I used to sell Avon, I had loads of "samples" (shampoo,conditioner,tiny single use lipsticks,tiny vials of colognes,etc) which I donated to my local "birthright" charity. They were very happy to accept them.

We all know someone serving in Afghanistan--many of those guys are seriously in need right now. A friend's husband is on a base where they've closed the base store--they now have NO access to buy anything--they'd be delighted to get a box of shampoos, soaps, shampoo, etc. And since they're not getting breakfast these days, if you send a box over, it wouldn't hurt to toss in a few boxes of granola bars, some dried fruit, etc.

I pour the shampoo bottles into an empty standard size shampoo bottle and we use it.

The soaps can be used for homemade laundry detergent, melted for liquid hand soap or shower gel- add water, used as stain bars for laundry.

The mouthwash bottles - toilet bowl cleaner or bug spray on decks, base of house, etc.

Conditioner - dilute with vinegar and use as fabric softner.

Left overs I keep until I have a large box full then donate to a local homeless shelter with shower facilities. They are always happy to get them.

our USO will also take them: they keep a supply in the restrooms with a note letting the servicemembers know they are free to take whatever they need. Often servicemembers are stranded at these locations when travelling, and having supplies to freshen up really helps!
