Unplugging appliances saves on electric?

hi, i've been reading some posts here and there, afterall, who doesn't want to save a buck or two. i'm pretty good at it, but i'm seeing where people say they unplug unused appliances.

do you mean to tell me that if they are left in the socket and not turned on, it's still using up electric?

It's called "standby" electricity, and yes, you can save by unpluging some things. One of the biggest energy gobblers are the transformers that continuously recharge your cell phone, power your computer peripherals and keep your Game Boy ready for use.

"A recent study by students and scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) shows that the average California home pays between $50 and $70 every year to keep those little red lights burning, the clocks ticking and the electronics humming while the appliances go unused. Eliminating this standby or "leaking" electricity could save households between six and 26 percent on their average monthly electricity bill, the study found".

Instant-on features for TVs are constantly using electricity. I unplug any TVs that aren't in use. I also turn off and unplug the computer at the end of the day.

"Computer printers are one of the big energy wasters, some of them drawing 11.5 watts when idling. Some TVs and video cassette recorders draw almost as much, while set-top cable boxes can draw twice that: the most wasteful Ross found drew 23 watts when the box was off".

There are colleges/universities that encourage students to "unplug" when they are gone on breaks. It saves a tremendous amount of money in dorms when students unplug all those TVs, computers, and other electronic gadgets while they are absent during breaks.

My bread machine has a tiny red light that stays on all of the time.

As I live alone, a loaf of bread lasts for several days.

I have no idea how much power the little beggar is using - but "zero" isn't one of the possible answers.

Several of my radios show the time ... all of the time (except when the power has gone off, when they reset to "12:00" and start flashing) ... and I scarcely need to have the correct time available within eyeshot (sort of like "earshot" - but for a different purpose and from a different part of the head) so frequently.

It is somewhat more helpful now, though, for my watch band broke a few months ago, I carried the band-free watch in my pocket for a time ...

... but lost it.

Too frugal to have bought another ... yet.

Maybe I'll do some hinting between now and Christmas.

You know the old saying, "Christmas is coming".

Meaning that one might get some presents.

But more often meaning that whatever gratification that one had hoped to get ... was probably quite a long way off.

For a little longer they are bamboozling you. Power companies ask you to conserve a peak hours as when the demand outweighs the supply, they must buy power on the spot market and that increases costs. So, yes, in the long, long run, you pay more through higher rates when you put excess demand on he power grid. In theory, it makes sense to not tax the system. Now, for the truth. The basic analog meter does not know the time of day. It spins as it meters and does not spin any faster at different times of the day. Go ahead and use as you pleas. BUT! Smart meters are now being installed throughout California over the next 5 years to the tune of say 5 million units or so. They are already hitting areas of San Diego county and Riverside county. These meters will have the capability of load control and can actually shut down your high load appliances if needed in a crisis. They can also monitor your use at peak hours and charge you a higher punitive rate. At some point, they will interface with major appliances and you will have 20 minutes to several hours to acknowledge using or not using these appliances in high use periods. It is coming. The goos news is that they will credit a kw for a kw saved in those cut back periods. All the more reason to cut back on consumption on the third highest user in the house, the pool pump.

Somewhere out there in net land reads that if you're not in the room to feel the benefits of the ceiling fan air movement across your body , turn off that ceiling fan as its just wasting power and generating added heat for the ac to deal with. Makes sense. I've gotten in the habit of cooking with pots on the smallest burner even if a bigger pot,, with a top on it. Didn't use tops hardly at all in the past. My standard boil for 7-10 minutes frozen mixed veggies used to take half dial to simmer once it reached boil - now with a top they simmer almost too much at Warm, the lowest dial setting on electric range. Saves some power and keeps the humidity down, contains that steam heat too for lower ac consumption. Soon as I'm done i rush to cool the pot & top under the sink water... so I'm wasting some bucks there but think cheap bucks compared. Keep whacking off nice chunks of daily kwh's here without much extra efforts. Just made an evaporative cooler, free of cost - amazing it works a bit. Box fan blowing across a damp dish towel suspended above one of the rectangular hospital plastic sponge bath things. Set it on top of two big deli containers so the towel wicks water up from the hospital container ... floor temp right next to it was 83F, same temp everywhere else in here too, the towel is 77 degrees and 10 feet away a white chunk of cardboard has had lowered temps everytime I check. (waitn on fedders warrantee man, bum fan motor)

Car with standard transmission uses about 5 - possibly 10% less fuel. Skilfully done, car drivers can save even more. When you see a traffic signal turn yellow ahead - there's no law that says that you have to keep your foot continuing to push on the throttle! Then hit the brake, about a hundred feet from the intersection. Foot off of the throttle: coast toward the light. If you know it fairly well, you may be able to arrange to arrive close to the last car in the line just as it starts to move forward, and it takes less fuel to increase the speed while rolling that to start rolling from a standing stop. I often push in the clutch and turn off the ignition when I see a light go yellow ahead ... and can often manage to keep the car rolling as I approach a red light when it turns to green. Some say that coasting with the engine off is illegal in their jurisdiction, so best check with the legal people before you try that: the police here say that I am to be in charge of my vehicle at all times. No jack-rabbit starts when the light turns green, either. Try to arrange to travel with a friend driving a car that tells immediate fuel economy levels, get him to make a jack-rabbit start from a light that just turned green - and see your jaw drop as you see what mileage per gallon is being obtained at that point. Try to drive as closely as possible to the same speed, and a few miles/kms. per hour under the speed limit ... but not so far under as to be a hazard to the free flow of traffic. That's made easier by leaving a cushion of space between you and the car ahead ... and try not to get too incensed when other drivers pull into that hole in your lane, stealing your cushion. ole joyful

We are in N. CA about 90 min north of Sacramento. We have 1 good (but small) appliance shop in town. We will go to Sac or the bay area for decent appliance shops. Thanks for the feedback, folks. After reading I think part of my thought process was that, over the years, I have had incredibly good luck with appliances. I think I've had maybe 2 or 3 services calls for all appliances I've owned in the last 20 years...perhaps I am blinded by that track record. We had both single and double electric ovens on the list. However, it does look like a range-top with single oven, convection microwave, and a warming drawer will meet our needs. If we did double oven, the microwave would be a standard micro and we would eliminate the warming drawer. As far as how we used our oven, we both cook and bake, but much more of the former. We have just a single oven now and we make it work, but my issue is usually with the semi-frequent 2nd dish that needs cooking and also warming up plates (it's a thing for me). As far as induction, I'll take a look again, but the one time I messed with it, I wasn't a fan. as far as the fridge, the idea of a built it is more about "we're dumping XXX$ into this thing, we want to switch from a full size bottom freezer/french door fridge to a side by side counter depth, so let's get the xtra room". Wow, i never really thought about these things! I walked through my house just the other night and was quite shocked to see how many little lights were on (but at the time it didn't occur to me how much electricity was being wasted) at my computer desk. The router was lit up, so was the modem, keyboard, printer, optical mouse, monitor standby light and the computer tower itself. All those green and red lights looked like christmas lights! Tonight before bed, i will turn the surge protector off, it will shut everything down at one time and in the morning I will only have to turn the surge protector back on to get everything to come to life again. I think I'll take another trip through the house tonight in the dark and check out the kitchen.

You might want to consider what that sudden surge of electricity does when you turn these items back on. It is always at turn on when the light bulb burns out. Might cost you more than what you save.

Make sure the computers are properly turned off before you hit the "Off" switch on the surge protector, though.

My former car's headlights went on automatically when I turned on the ignition, but there are just small running lights on this one, so I'm having a hard time getting used to turning on the heavy lightrs (including tail lights) at sundown. And turning them off, unless I'm parking next to a wall. After about three hours in the library the other day, during which darkness fell, I'd left the headlights on. I fully expected the battery to be almost run down - but it started the car with no trouble.

Was I thankful! But - I have CAA, so could have called them for a boost (if I could have found a phone).

MY HUSBAND AND I TRAVEL A LOT. I AM ALWAYS TRYING TO LIVE EVERYTHING UNPLUGGED EXCEPT FOR THE REFRIGERATOR. MY HUSBAND KEEPS TELLING ME THAT I WILL BROKE DOWN ALL THE AMPLIANCES IF I DOING THAT.

I take my phones out of the charging station at night, turn off power strip for tv, computer, wireless hub,..I thought about turning off the water heater, but that is a breaker. If we go away for a weekend I would throw the breaker on that too.
