hail damage

is it necessary to have hail damage insurance in MN during the winter? i got a new homeowners policy this summer. 12mo premium is about 1000. agent asked if i had ever replaced roof. yes, i have, about 5 yrs ago. i got my 6 mo renewal last week and premium was 1500. what the heck? turns out ins co requires proof of new roof to provide lower premium. i dont have any paper work so discount is gone. i had 1500 deduc for hail damage. i raised it to 5000 and premium went down 484 dollars. i know hail coverage is for exterior. roof, siding, windows but i feel with 2 ft of snow on roof that hail damage is slim. maybe in april, i can lower deduc and than raise it back up in october? i called geico, their quote was over 2000 for coverage. thats with a 2500 deduc for hail. ins co are really sticking it too homeowners
