O/T..but important

Hi all,
I usually lurk, but I've noticed a disturbing trend. There are at least 4 spam related posts on the first page alone. I've seen way too many online communties destroyed by spammers. Won't you all join me in reporting those posts that violate the TOS? It's easy.

Go to the bottom of the page and click on letters and comments.

Fill out the form, choosing Report Abuse of Forums from the drop down menu, and let the powers that be know what's going on. I can't promise that it will help, but it can't hurt:) Val

I agree with you valtog--the Spam & some posters nasty & mean spirited comments are enough to make you go back to t.v. reruns.
I also am getting a feeling that some of the postings are phony. Possibly kids amusing themselves over the summer.
Your page is really interesting. Nice graphics

Thanks Marge:)
I think it worked because the spam seems to be gone!

Most of us have been pretty well inoculated against spam, haven't we?

I doubt whether they recruit many suckers, here.

Most of us make fun of them, or slap them on the wrist, when we see their spam.

Perhaps the spammer is long gone (and doesn't bother to return) ... but it pretty well identifies them for the regulars here.

They come and go ... sort of like measles. Or mumps ... which can be somewhat risky. But that's mainly the case for males ... and there aren't a lot of that variety, around here.

ole joyful

P.S. I guess I'm more in favour of self-regulation in the school yard (including calling the bullies on their abuse), rather than tattling to the teacher.

Maybe partly because I, like the dog that doesn't move fast enough when coming into the house, sometimes gets his tail caught in the screen door.

BTW, to return to the topic ... if you want to learn some ideas about how to make money work harder (for you, rather than the other guys) ... ask me ... I've been helping people do that for over 20 years.

There is no self-policing on these forums. There really are only two courses of action:

1) Sit idly by as the forum gets taken over by spammers OR

2) Take action. Being that this is not a school yard, taking a poke (physically anyway:) at him or her is not in the cards. The only thing I can do (that really will make any difference) is report it, which I have done and will continue to do in order to keep this forum OURS, not the spammers.

If you had ever seen a favorite forum or message board get obliterated by spammers, you would understand why I feel this way.

I like playing with the spammers a bit...b4 maybe reporting them...just depends upon my mood and if others are playing with them.

I particularly like to suggest the 'spammer' check out my 'special' link just for them.

I think they are particularly stupid to be posting at the absolute most inappropriate forums....like telling us here how to 'Get rich quick' or payday loan info...LMAO.

Here is a link that might be useful: Save this one for spammers

I am afraid to click it on. It won't "do anything" to a computer will it? Is it NSFW?

I like to play around with the spammers too sometimes if I have the time, and if I know it is not a bot, so I know it will be read. Then I have them reported and banned. Heh-he.

Bud,

I am afraid to click it on. It won't "do anything" to a computer will it? Is it NSFW?

Do you mean the link I provided above? I didn't know what an NSFW was so checked Wikipedia.

Not suitable/safe for work (NSFW), not work-suitable (NWS), or not school-suitable (NSS) is Internet slang or shorthand. Typically, the NSFW tag is used on interactive discussion areas (such as internet forums, blogs, and community websites) to mark URLs or hyperlinks that may be sexually explicit or includes audio that contains profanity, so that the reader can avoid content that may be objectionable.

No. No profanity or sexy material. The worst word is idiot

What is a 'bot' that you mentioned?

Sue

RE: O/T..but important

In this context, 'bots are computer programs which just troll the Internet, pumping out spam. Their ability to determine field layout and mailing addresses on Web sites lets these programs post their trash automatically and much faster than humans can. 'bots are one reason some sites require you to enter a random string of characters before your post is entered. Unfortunately, 'bots have begun to figure out those characters, as well. It's a big cat-and-mouse game.
