Savings on remodeling

When I get ready to make a change at my house, be it new tile for the kitchen or bath or a fresh coat of paint or even adding a new door or window. The first place I head to is the Habitat for Humanity Restore. They have just about everything you could ever want to do a remodel at a significantly lower price than your local home improvement store. All the products are donated some are new and some are used. The fact that they have used stuff is cool too. I have several friends that are restoring old homes and they often have the old stuff they need to make the project look like it was part of the original structure. And all the proceeds go back to habitat to help more families. There is a listing of all their stores on their website.

There also are "non-Habitat" shops in some cities which deal in the same kinds of materials: used (the phrase often employed is "architectural salvage"); new; overstocks; customer returns; etc. Here in the Twin Cities, there is a Re-Use Center that does this very thing and another store that deals less in the bulk goods (leftover trusses/paint/lamps) than with details like period-appropriate stair railings and Newell posts, radiator covers, etc. There is a Restore here now, too.
