A question about the 10 10 numbers

Posted by Judith (My Page) on

I have been using the 10 10 220 number for long distance and it has worked fine. I now am using the 10 10 987 number and that is even better. My question is this: Is any reason that one's local phone and long distance company would not let one use these dial up numbers for long distance? The reason I ask is that my sister, who is on a very small fixed income and lives over 2,000 miles from me, has been unable to use the 10 10 numbers when calling me. She has Verizon for both local and long distance and when she tries to dial the 10 10 numbers a recording from Verizon cuts in and says she nees to call her Verizon office. It won't let her dial the 10 10 numbers. Is this legal? I thought everyone had access to these dial up numbers for long distance. I have had no trouble using them. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Thanks. Judith

Have her call her Verizon office and ask them.

LEGALLY they can't block it, but perhaps she has to dial a slightly different number, or maybe there is a technical problem.

Since 10-10-987 is a division of MCI (who also owns 10-10-220, btw), I won't use them because of past history of problems and rip offs by MCI. 10-10 Phone Rates site has some interesting reading about billing errors at MCI and complaints they've received from people using 987. They have good information and comparisons of the different companies that may be of interest to you. Just be cautious and watch your bills closely if you do use MCI.

I don't 'buy' long distance service since I use my cell phone for those calls BUT.... have found out that you cannot use the 10 10 numbers if you are not subscribing to some long distance carrier. That stinks!

Also, I believe there are still some older exchanges that don't support the 10-10... numbers, also called "dial-around" numbers.

The biggest thing I think you need to watch with the dial-arounds is the minimum charge per call. On some of them, they say the first 20 minutes is 99 cents. So you still pay 99 cents if you call and get their answering machine, or if they can't talk at that moment, or for any other reason you wind up with a one or two minute call. A few of those buck a minute calls will eat away a lot of your savings.

It's possible that she's advised her local company not to allow LD. The LD that she thinks she has may just be the local/intra-LATA calls.

My long distance bill last month was $5.09! No minimum, no basic fees, no hidden fees. It was for 99.5 minutes, it cover long distance and local long distance. My mother found this long distance company. I watched her bills for 6 months before I switched. For the last 2 years I did not have a long distance company (I cancelled AT&T) and used calling cards. Local long distance was killing me with the costs. Very happy now. 10 10 numbers were too pricey for me.

I buy calling cards at Sam's Club for 3.4¢ a min. Cheaper than the 5¢ the 10 10 811? # was that I was using, and they started charging the monthly fee too.

My dau in CA got one for 2.9¢ at Sam's club - but maybe they charge more here in MO.

Easy to add more min over the phone too.

At the present time I don't think there is a better bargain than calling cards but you have to beware some of them have hidden costs. I no longer pay for long distance calls on my phone bills because I can't understand them. I had AT&T and everytime I turned around they increased the charge per minute. If I called them they would credit my account but a couple months later I would find they had increased it again. They never gave me notice. I purchase a calling card and my wife can talk to her hearts content.

I just ran across a site called PhoneDog.com---has anyone checked them out? They list the top 25 phone companies by state and do comparisons.

Does anyone know about a company called "Epicus?"
