When my husband died i had a veritable pharmacy or meds I couldn't use which I knew had been expensive and I wondered if there were someone who had no insurance who could use them...of course no pharmacy can reuse meds once they were dispensed, but I asked the pharmacist what to do. This wasn Rite Aid or Walgreens or Walmart...but just my neighborhood pharmacy. He explained that all pharmacies have drugs that for one reason or another they can't use and have to dispose of them properly. When I had to give myself a daily shot during the Chemo, I had a sharps container that I was supposed to return to the hospital when I no longer needed it. Linda c

Yes, do check with his doctor on which medications your dad is taking... Sometimes a doctor will prescribe certain brand names when there are other brand name drugs which do the same thing but are much cheaper... ( The doctor tried switching to a drug for hubby's high cholesterol which had a $112. deductible for us to pay, even with our drug coverage, when another brand only costs us $12. ) Besides that there are generic brands which are a lot cheaper... Another thing you may want to look into is where your dad gets his prescriptions filled... Places like Target, K-Mart and Kroger's have hundreds of drugs for only $4. for a months supply and $10. for three months supply... Good luck Rita P.S. Scroll down to the bottom of this post... In our area flushing medication is HIGHLY discouraged. Water quality is affected by Rx's, antibiotics and estrogens have been found in drinking water. I personally wouldn't put them in the trash either, I'd be concerned about seepage into groundwater in landfills. So, what do you do? My pharmacy sells little pre-paid vinyl mailers for a few dollars and you can put all your medications in them and send them to a disposal company. I'm too cheap to do that in my town it's not necessary. Our police department has a big pill disposal box in the lobby, it looks like a mail box, but it's for pills and Rx things. You can drop things in there anytime at all. It's free and very user-friendly. In my town they ask you to rip all the labels off your medications so there is nothing to identify you as the owner. I usually take all my pills etc and pour them into a plastic baggie and dump them in. The pill bottles are actually recyclable, so they go in with my recyclables. I think that pharmacies also take back empty pill bottles, but I've never done this. I would check with your waste disposal company's customer service department and also, call your town and find out if they have special disposal opportunities. So many people are still flushing meds! In most places water treatment plants just can't process eliminate meds from the water. It doesn't just affect human health, it's also affecting wildlife.

I'll tell you my terrible experience with Versed. After being induced and laboring for 2 days it was decided to do a c-section. It was the worst thing in the world. The Versed, knocked me out, but I was awake and couldn't tell them. I felt the complete c-section from beginning to end. In my mind I was telling them how much it hurt and to stop and do something, but my husband and Doctor and nurses all said that I didn't say anything during the surgery. Afterwards they told me that I was dreaming it and that I couldn't have felt anything. When I met with the Anisthesiolgost before my second c-section they told me that The Versed probably knocked out my communication skills and made it so that I couldn't communicate. I was so freaked out about having a 2nd c-section that I told my husband if I started blinking my eyes that I could feel what they were doing. Well I didn't feel anything but when They did the spinal for the c-section they did it too high and it affected my diaphram. I was having a hard time breathing, and the only thing that they could give me was Versed, I refused and told them instead just to sit by my head and remind me to breath. I am glad someone posted this and that I am not the only one with a reaction. When ever they ask about allergies, Versed is first on my list. Stacie
