Eat at a high end restaurant for $2!

Hey everyone, for this weekend only you can get gift certificates to almost any restaurant for $2! some restrictions apply depending on each restaurant. It seems like they have these promotions every month. My fiance' and I used one last month, it really worked, LOL! We were so shocked!

We've used it a few times with good results. It helps the restaurants because we have tried places we would not have eaten at otherwise.

I don't quite understand the restaurants limitations. What would this mean?

"Valid for dinner menu only with a minimum purchase of $50/2 entrees".

This is a little neighborhood place and none of their dinners are anywhere near $25. Friend and I stop there for lunch once in a while just because of the location but wouldn't be a destination if going out.

Some of the others have minimums of $35. too, or is that just minimum order for the certificates?

I've been using the Culinarian for about 2 months now. Some thoughts: The burners are really just the best. So happy with them. Tremendous control and the most even heating I've ever seen for sautÃÂ© pans. They work great high, low and medium. They may need a little fine tuning on delivery as everyone has different gas pressure (I had to turn mine up just a hair) The oven gets great even heat even without the convection on. I no longer have to turn my pies every 15 min. Heats up fast, cools down fast and works great. Griddle: like with all good griddles, it takes a while for it to heat up and get even. Wait 20 min after the light turns off to make sure the heat is evenly spread. Otherwise I'm very happy with it. I use it for pancakes, bacon, hash browns and grilled sandwiches. Rotisserie: Messy messy messy, but thank god for the self clean oven. Works great for chicken and turnkey breast. I'm going to try a pork shoulder and a beef joint soon. We had to upgrade our hood fan to accommodate the smoke that comes from the rotisserie Cleaning: The range top pretty much comes apart and cleans super easy in just a few minutes. I clean mostly with simple green, but for tougher stuff Barkeeper's friend shines it up really nice. The griddle is more problematic since it doesn't come off, but still very doable. Use a microfiber towel to finish everything off to a nice shine. Cons: very few. The finish on the aluminum burner caps tends to chip, and I had to replace 3 of the 4 on delivery. Replacement parts arrived in just a few days. The cover for the griddle is designed in such a way that it is hard not to scratch the front panel with it. There are two (hidden) spots that are a little hard to clean. That's it really. As far as performance goes I have zero complaints.

I like smaller places where you can see the kitchen, but many places you would be physically barred or removed if you tried to access the kitchen. I know that all the "chain" type restaurants have prepared/frozen food, virtually nothing is fresh. That's for consistency, you can eat the same meal at Applebee's in Grand Rapids, Michigan as you can in Los Angeles, California. Doesn't make it good, but it's consistent and you can count on it. Ashley worked at Applebee's and at Red Lobster, Elery's daughter works at Olive Garden and used to work at Bob Evan's. Virtually everything comes frozen or in mixes dictated by "headquarters". Are they better than McDonald's and Burger King? Maybe, and I think they are restaurants, but they sure wouldn't be "quality" restaurants. I think it's just adding another level to the designation. I hear about fast food restaurants, eat-in restaurants, chain restaurants. This would just be another designation and I think it's a good idea. Of course, Elery and I eat out about twice a year, it's not something I particularly enjoy. I just keep thinking that I could make that better, cheaper, not have to drive 100 miles. I'm one of the pickiest eaters I know, and I want things done a certain way. Chain restaurants won't/can't deviate much out of their required norm and some of the others that are actually good (i.e. not a chain) get all offended if you ask them to leave something off or fix it differently. Plus, Elery's been on Weight Watchers and I've been kind of tagging along, so eating out is sometimes difficult. We do make regular passes through the local McDonald's drive through, we feed the dog there. A McDonald's Onion Cheddar Burger is his favorite treat, after I pick off all the onions, and their vanilla ice cream cone is his second choice. Ashley says that's a ringing endorsement, I don't eat their food generally, but I'll feed the dog there. (grin) Actually, the best meals normally come from a couple of local "dives", they make soup and bake bread from scratch, homemade pies with their own pastry, everything is fresh and much is local. They each seat about 25 people, so they don't sell a volume that requires mass produced food. Annie

Where you're talking $1000 per head, when it's not a fundraiser, it's still not about the food. The food might be utterly amazing (should be at that price) but it's the entertainment value that people are paying for. The "experience" as Gooster said. Price is also about gatekeeping. You can go egalitarian with a lottery (e.g., world series tickets for the non-subscribers), first come (any wristband line), show the love (best friends, friends, vocal fans, fans, in order, and perhaps a lottery after the list, so tweeting them a lot gets you higher on the list), etc. The other thing you can do when your places are significantly fewer than requests is raise the price until you have superdemand (booked a month out) but still can offer spots to callers that aren't an impossible, unknowable future away. Plus, when you raise the price without over-shrinking the demand, you make more money. The pressure to perform is that much greater, but if you're in a most mistakes are preventable situation, it's not a biggie. It's not about "worth". It's about supply and demand. IC, if three of each seems "mean" to you for a starter for one person, I'm sure you have smaller items, or perhaps bigger expectations. Of course we have a lot of people here trying to keep themselves underweight, would would order that starter and a vegetable salad with no dressing, no main or dessert, and call it a big dinner. :) Maybe some of them leaked out to the pleasure craft near that restaurant, and they're just catering to them. :)

MizLizzie - Typicaly when local code requires MUA, the requirement is for when there is an exhaust fan with greater than 300 cfms. The determinant of whether you will need more than 300 cfms is somewhat how powerful your cooktop is, but even more, it is what you and your family cook regularly. If you are, for example, a vegetarian family and doing little frying, you can get away with 300 cfms. If on the other hand you are a family that frequently fries bacon, fish, hamburgers, uses a lot of aromatic spices, and/or stir fries, you will need more like 900 cfms. None of this differs if you are cooking these things with gas or induction. You need the appropriate exhaust to pull out cooking odors, smoke and grease from your home, induction or not. If you need high cfms to exhaust the type of cooking you do, and have a tight house, you must have MUA, regardless whether local code requires it or not, and regardless if your cooking source is induction. Many people opt for 300 cfms exhaust to avoid having to deal with MUA, but they will not have the sufficient exhaust power for frying fish, bacon and the like.

Hey, Canadians!

Does anyone know whether this is available in Canada, or parts thereof, or is it another of those "U.S. only" things?

I get many messages, almost daily, with various offers, carrying the proviso, "Must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. resident".

I used to rush to the pizza or sub shops at closing time and sometimes walk away with exta pizza or just a ton of food that they wasnt picked up they normally would toss for the price of one.

Taco bells here used to load me up at the drive through at closing time. Order two each of a couple of things and get home to find 10 of each plus a bonus or two.

breenthumb the minimums are generally for the entire bill. For instance it may be a $20/$30 ($20 off a $30 purchase), $25/$35, etc.

Google restaurant.com coupon codes. They will run coupon codes for 80% off, 70% off, and once or twice a year a 90% off code. Those percentages are off the regular price of $4 for a $25 gift certificate. The current code is only 60% off with some free gift certificate to somewhereoranother. The 80% off code was last week.

Some certificates, especially those that are $10/$10 or $25/$25 go fast and are not restocked regularly.

I use restaurant....com frequently. One of our favorite restaurants is on the list. I don't want to wear out my welcome at this place by using the coupons every time so I only use one when we are taking friends who have never been there.

I always check for these coupons in the area we will be traveling. Example: We will be in Denver area for a week and I have bought two coupons using the latest 80% off code.

Never mind, I read the terms and conditions - one certificate at a time. I was surprised, because some the restaurants specifically say this and some don't, so I figured that it wasn't a general rule.
