kitchen stuff cheap?

Posted by Valtog (My Page) on

We bought an Arts and Crafts bungalow in a town with great schools (no more tuition or 30 minute rides...WOOHOO) But the kitchen is pretty "true to the style" in that almost everything is freestanding. The seller is a decorator and the stuff there now is "borrowed" and doesn't convey with the house. I really like the look she has and wondered if anyone has an online resource for inexpensive freestanding stuff (cabinets, shelving, counters etc) for a kitchen.
Thanks! Val

Well look at IKEA.....they have reasonable things I think and lots are free standing...OK maybe not the right look but it is worth looking into. Bud

Cabinets?

When you consider the price that one must pay for cabinets ...

... have you thought of building your own?

They don't take a lot of wood.

The basic cabinet is not hard to build.

It's mostly the doors that cost the money, for upper cabinets (and some for end pieces).

For lower cabinets, the countertop adds a substantial amount - but not an inordinate amount (and less additional than on off the rack, or especially the custom-built jobs). You could plan your counter system in any way that you choose.

Study some of the ones in your friends' houses. If you haven't really looked at how they go together before, have a good look. Maybe you'll be surprised at how simply they are built.

You could buy a router and use it on some scrap wood to get into practice.

I'm sure that you could make some beautiful doors, yourself.

Actually - you could buy about a dozen routers for the price of a set of cabinets.

Hey - what about asking on Gardenweb/THS who has had experience at building cabinets?

They could give advice at a distance.

If in a nearby state, they might even come over for a weekend to show you how and get you started.

Even someone in a distant state might be interested to come visit the sites/sights in your area, even some nearby relatives, on their vacation. And spend half a day with you to help you get going.

How about that, all you carpenters?

Do you belong to a freecycle group? I see free cabinets and furniture offered fairly often.

I've never heard the word freecycle. Is it like the large area at our recycling center where people bring their unwanted goods? It has a sign "your unwanted goods are valuable to someone else?" My husband checks in there fairly regularly. But to tell you the truth...most Mainers are pretty frugal and if they were getting rid of usable cabinets, they would ask friends and family and would probably have more than one party interested:))) Thanks! Hi

I just discovered freecycle myself. It sounds like a great idea.

Here is a link that might be useful: Freecycle link

Put an ad in the local freepaper saying that you would help take out old cabinets if someone were replacing with new.

Any old cabinet can be painted or stripped to look retro. The retro look includes a lot of open cabinets or glass doors.

You can make your own glass doors by cutting out the inside of the doors with a jigsaw and puting in panes of glass or chicken wire.

Do you have beams? Can you make fake beams? If you want to hang pots, I've seen towel racks put on the beams to hang pots from with s hooks. These older towel racks can be found for pennies at thrift stores.

I've seen old broken pretty stoves used as countertops and cabinets (place a glass piece on the burners.

Hang old aprons for kitchen curtains.

Old advertising signs for interest.
