Does any one have a track phone from kmart or local store. I talked to a cell phone place and they have a hookup for track phones so they told me to buy a phone from a store and just buy the minutes as I need them. The phone is for my husband and he won't be using it all that much. Does a track phone work like a cell phone in roaming and how do we know if we can get service where we are at. Thanks Debbie

There is a place on there that will show you if there is service where you are at.
Basically, when you are in your home calling area, each minutes uses 1 unit of time on your phone. If you are out of your home calling area "roaming" your phone will say "roaming" and 1 minute of call time will use 2 units of time on your phone.
You will need to activate a new card every 60 days to keep your phone active. Unused units roll over when you activate a new card. There are cards that you can buy that are good for a year though too.
I personally like my Tracfone, but I only use it for emergencies or when I really need to call someone and don't have access to a phone.

I have a tracfone and I think it's the best deal around for people who only use it for emergencies. I got it at one of the 'mart stores and got the $100 card which lasts a year. I think it comes out to around $8.33 per month. I was asking the sales person at the store the same question about if it will get reception wherever you go, and I *think* they said tracfone uses other major phone companies towers so they get top notch reception. (Not sure if that's exactly what they said, so check it out for yourself, but I remember being relieved at her answer.) I had the chance to test it one time when I was driving in a remote area of the Pocono mountains and the reception was fine. I would definitely recommend it. You might also want to check opinions on Amazon.com and epinions.com.

tina- Did you see the story about the 8 year old boy who used the app AFTER his was stolen? He traced it to a warehouse where police found over $300000 worth of stolen goods. I wasn't sure how he used the app after he lost it, but he said he downloaded it after. (Maybe he had the original box with all the info?) I saw the story yesterday and plan to install it on my ipad today. Hope you find it. Dee

Fitbit Charge and Charge HR will track all the stuff the Flex does but with a more intuitive display. The band in the Flex and Charge has an odd connector, which a lot of folks complain about. I had the Charge and didn't have problems with the connector. The Charge (without HR) is a little cheaper and has the odd snap connector like the Flex. The Charge HR has a watch band type connector and is more secure and is worth the extra $20. The Charge and Charge HR are probably best for your FIL. Having said all that, there have been some quality issues with the bands. Peeling, separating, etc are reported within 24 months of ownership. I have the FitBit Surge and really like it but it's more than what he needs. It has independent GPS tracking (which means I don't have to bring my phone with me) and is useful for running, walking, biking and other activity tracking. I used to have the Charge but the band broke so I returned it and replaced with the Surge. I've had the Surge since Feb and FitBit has already replaced it once due to band peeling. There are many different devices out there. I like my FitBit but there are things I don't like about it.....which is probably going to happen with any product you choose.

Neetsie, thanks for telling your experience; I'm hoping that this is exactly how it would be for her. HB, that is a good point about the future; I'll have to think about that. I think I would feel really bad to do it for a number of years and then have to cut her off. Might just be better to give her a chunk o change and then she can decide how quickly to use it up. Then maybe I'll change my will and if she outlives me and isn't on Medicaid herself (an inheritance would goof that up), leave her a bit more. Thanks tina. I think because the $ never has really felt like "mine" because I didn't earn it or save it, I feel sort of like the steward of the money and need to figure out where it should go besides to me. eta: phoggie, we must have been posting at the same time, thank you for the additional ideas.
