Car Insurance for College Student

| We didn't find this out until our daughter's second year away at college.
Apparently some car insurance companies will reduce the amount of the car insurance premium for students for the number of months they are away at college. When we told our insurance provider that recently, they immediately reduced the premium.
The theory, I guess, is that (A) they have to be at least semi serious about their education which makes them more mature than many their age (B) if they are studying they won't likely be partying as much if they are not in school.
Anyway, we never knew about that so I thought I'd share!

another tip - if the sudent gets good grades (I think at least a B average) that qualifies them for a good student discount with many insurance firms.

Also, shop around. Different insurance companies have different criteria for how they figure premiums. When dd started driving, our insurance only went up $500--that's virtually unheard of in my area, but our company is a small one, that only writes policies for drivers with extremely clean records.

My insurance co. has our 19 YO dtr listed as a driver on our policy and penalizes her for inexperience. She is a part-time college student.

To get that discount from our insurance company, our daughter has to be a full time college student away at college (meaning she has limited access to the family car). Dan

My insurance company requires the student to be full time at a college a minimum of 50 miles away to qualify for the discount. But good student discounts can also apply. Sherry

A few places also offer a discount if you let them hook up a monitor to the vehicle and give them the reports. It monitors the mileage, speed, rates of acceleration/deceleration and the like. It's totally voluntary but I guess they give pretty good rates if the driver shows themself to be cautious. Could be an option for some.
