Chia seeds and other questions

Yesterday I stopped by a new shop in our little town to check it out. Seems it is a vitamin shop with lots of small bulk packages of different items. After chatting with them for a while, the husband began to extoll the virtues of chia seed. After doing some research, I was floored by their nutritional value.

The reason I was in town was to go to Walmart to get some canned salmon. Before I left, I had been online to check the price at Sam's. To my surprise, not one Sam's within a hundred miles had salmon in stock. Well surprise, surprise, the shelf at Walmart was also empty!

As I have two family members who have thyroid problems, I am more concerned than ever with natural cures for common ailments. If anyone has suggestions for something that has really worked for you, please post.

I would also like to know if anyone has a good online supplier for bulk chia seeds and other items of interest. I would also like to know if chia seeds need to be ground. I have heard yes and no.

Things are not getting better folks. I do not expect anything I buy today to be cheaper in six months. So put back what you can.

The link below seems to be a good on line price, and if you order 6 LBS (the best value) you get free shipping.

It looks like at most other places on line, they run about $10 per LB....look HERE

According to How to Use Chia Seeds they need not be ground. I think any way they can be incorporated into the diet, would be fine.

I'll bet grainlady will have some good input on this.

Jiffy Seed Starting Mix works fine and easy to hydrate if you do two simple things: 1) microwave distilled water to 130-140 degrees fahrenheit or max hand hot temperature. Using a liquid measuring pitcher place 1 quart of Jiffy SSM in a clean container like a one gallon zip lock bag. Then add 1 cup of hot water to the bag or container. Expel any excess air and zip bag up. 2) Using your hands grip and massage the bag. This step takes 2 minutes max. You will now have hydrated Jiffy SSM. Want to do a whole bag? Add 4 cups hand hot water. Wash and dry your hands and one arm up to elbow. Plunge hand and arm into mix and grip and squeeze Jiffy SSM. Be sure to get all of mix fully hydrated. Remove hand and arm and wash. This step takes 5 minutes max. You now have Jiffy SSM fully hydrated at the correct hydration. When you add the water to the mix it will seem like it is not enough but after 2-5 minutes of mixing you can squeeze a handful of the mix and just barely get a little water out. I only use Jiffy SSM. I have had trouble with some of the other seed starting mixes ( Schul.. et al) over the years. I have not tried the other expensive mixes mentioned above. I go cheap. Works great. I grow plants from seeds under lights most years 50+ flower varieties as well as some bushes and trees etc. Rick

Peppers, tomatoes love the heat & will do best if kept around 62F in or outside so keep them in a heated area till the outside temp reaches 62F/////////as for the cole crops they will need a hardening off period.

I'd strongly suggest that you leave the top soil out. The greatest top soil on earth turns into something quite different when used in a container. Real soil needs to be insitu for the 'system' in the term 'soil system' to work. I, too, would use a decent peat based potting mix, perhaps adding plenty of extra perlite to it. Bagged potting mixes are (typically) peat-based, so no reason to add extra, imo. You are getting a bit of a late start in your location. Some of the plants on your list are not known for their heat tolerance. But it's always worth experimenting. I always germinate my seeds in rows, in germination flats. The seeds are sown closely and I can get a couple of hundred in each flat. I'll use bottom heat until they germinate, then allow them to develop their second set of leaves 'au natural'. I'll then transplant the babies into their individual containers, usually decent sized plastic cell packs (1204s) or 2 inch square pots. All of the stuff can be sterilized from year to year and stacked for storage. Here is a link that might be useful:

Well..you are right about the summer maximum but to call this a monsoon....BEtween 2000-3000 m etres, where P. martinezii grows they get 680mm on average. So the circulation may well be that of a monsoon but the result is unlike what the word monsoon in general seems to imply. I also found out that the average temperature is a staggering 14 C (annual average). That is really high for a spruce. The climate is classified as oceanic. Okey, more like Southern France oceanic or NW Portugal Spain Oceanic. But than with less rain. Summer precipitation is probably 200-300 mm but the growing season is much longer. Probably all year round or at least march-november. This means that growing season precipitation is lower than that of most parts of NW Europe (much lower). It may succeed in the eastern US, but not where temperatures can drop to -20 or lower I think. I guess this spruce is may be a zone 9 one. But unsure.

I started to direct the post to grainlady as I know she is an invaluable source of information and she is so willing to share.

I also would like to know if there is any difference between the white seeds and regular seeds.

I don't know how that link to Chrysler jumped into my original post!

Your kitchen is sooooooo lovely and I'm tickled to see the bread lessons and recipe is working so well for you!!! Are your cabinets cherry?

I've been using chia seeds for many years now. They are my #1 emergency food item if I could only grab one thing.... Look for a copy of the book "The Magic of Chia" by James F. Scheer.

I've purchased them through several vendors and look for best price. The first place I ordered them from was the Dancing Algae Company (http://www.dancingalgae.com/) - and several times since. Bill Cooper at the Dancing Algae was very patient with all my questions for him and was very helpful. The last time I ordered I found a better price through The Raw Food World (http://www.therawfoodworld.com/).

Unlike flax, chia seeds do NOT need to be ground to get the health benefits. Our bodies can easily digest chia seeds - grinding doesn't make them more bioavailable. There's no reason to pay more for white chia seeds because there's no significant difference between white and black. You'll find both b/w in a bag of chia seeds.

We had a discussion recently over at the Cooking Forum on chia seeds (see link below).

Vitamin C powder (aka ascorbic acid) is available at most health food stores. I like iHerb.com and VitaCost.com for online sources. If you are using it in yeast bread recipes that use whole wheat flour, you can use Fruit Fresh (found with the canning things). Fruit Fresh is a mix of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and citric acid.

Thank you for the compliment on my kitchen. The cabinets are oak. What God put outside is even more beautiful. We have views of the TN mountains from all the windows.

I ordered some chia seeds from Amazon today. $21.94 for 5 lbs. I couldn't wait to get them, so I stopped by the health food store and purchased a small bag to get us going. I'm going to give them a try and will probably order a larger amount for storage.

I have a couple of jars of vitamin C, but I'll be looking around for a good price on a quantity to store.

I'll definately read the link on the cooking forum.

As usual, thank you for your answers.
