Winter crop in buckets is what I am thinking of, but how to heat it? Heating bricks in the oven, laying them under the container with plastic over it might work, but a squash loves hot weather. Panty hose or cheap knee highs cut into strips not cut or separated making a continuous strip would be a nice wrap, but what about mildew? With the weather making it rain 3 days a week, got rain again today, the plant will die of powdery mildew. Growing in a container with a cover over them will be the only guarantee, but if a bug should slip in there, it will be a waste of time. Don't the squash bugs stop laying around July? Both bugs are supposed to, do they really stop laying eggs, any one from Tennessee in zone 7 near clarskville know if they do? This is my second failed year at squash and it's my favorite. Totally disappointing. I'm reading every post to see if I can get some ideas. Good luck on yours!

Foil or mirrors might work but have you thought about supplementing with grow lights. We are trying the 255 LED panels that require only 14 watts at 120 volts. If you get some sun light these may help at other times. We are trying them to see if we can get more photosynthesis on the north side of our plants when the sun goes low in the winter. I have no idea why they say that but if they do then I wouldn't use it. I know people have ruined the lining of their regular ovens by lining the bottom with foil when the manual says not to. Weedmister is probably right and I'd err on the side of caution particularly if anything should go wrong you'd probably void your warranty.

Tomatoes like warm days and cool nights. Night temperatures need to drop to somewhere below 75F for the plants to set fruit. This can vary from one variety to another. My larger tomatoes, Monomahk's Hat, stopped setting fruit long before my cherry-sized ones which still set fruit on some of our cooler nights. I am not sure how low tomatoes can handle at night and still produce, though, but as I said, there are a few people on this forum who have kept their tomato plants growing right through winter. For autumn crops, I have been told you want to start seeds about now so that when those cooler nights do come, the plants are ready. Being that you are in the Bahamas, I am not sure how this would apply to you. Another thing to look into are Subtropical Fruits and Veggies. There are a lot more options for edibles than are commonly thought of. Foil would definitely keep the temperature down on your pots as the shiny side of the foil reflects light and heat (and alien mind-control rays). But be aware that that reflected light and heat has to go somewhere and if there are any other plants nearby, they will surely get fried. This could be a fun way to create an interesting pattern of crescent moon shaped sections of dead grass in the lawn. Another way to keep the foil on the pots is to simply fold the foil over the lip as you circle the pot and then crimp the two ends together after you cover the entire circumference. Or simply determine which side of the pot gets the most of the direct sun and fold one end over the lip while tucking the other end under the pot. The shady side of the pot doesn't really need to be foiled. Or crimp one end over the lip run the foil under the pot and back up the other side. Then make sure the foiled sides face east/west so the rising/setting sun hits the foil.
