Baking soda seems to be the universal natural cleaner! I recently purchased a large box for about $2. I use it to scrub my stainless steel pans-makes them nice and shiny! Also use on glasstop stove and once in a while mix a bit in with my shampoo to remove any build-up on my hair. I know some brush their teeth with it. My 1st grader likes to mix it with vinegar for a "science experiment."

One of the best drain openers is made from baking soda, salt and vinegar. Pour in the salt (it's an abrasive and helps scrape the scum) baking soda and pour vinegar on it. Foams up and you put the drain stoper back in and let the pressure move it through. Also gets rid of the the small from the buildup.

Sprinkle it on carpets when you leave, then vacuum it up when you come back from a closed up place. Cheaper than buying the perfumed carpet fresheners.

A friend still uses baking soda for an upset stomach.

I'm awful with "sweating the details" as you say. I need to just bite the bullet and mix the stuff up. I'm a little nervous that I am going to kill my lawn!! Will p. rye grass, red fescue and bluegrass be fine with this? I was thinking just to do a small part of the lawn tomorrow with the baking soda. I tried to find K+ bicarb but no luck... I found a natural based veggie soap -here in France. It is based on some "ancient" recipe. It is called "Liquid black soap" from black olives. It says it is a vegetable based soap and contains: Potassium soap and water. How does that sound??? If I shouldn't use it I'm sure I can find another use for it :) Let me know what you all think. So my story is that we didn't have room or enough sun in our original yard for a fig tree. We bought the lot behind us while we were galavanting around the world and had house the house rented out. We moved back in last year and are working on the edible landscaping. I do actually have two little trees in pots right now. We got 8 figs off the lsu gold. So far we've had one fig off the green ischia and it has 3 more to go. I plan to put these in the ground once we finish construction on the detached garage. If I get any more varieties I may have to keep them in pots. But they are a serious hassle to keep watered in this heat. I've had to water them twice a day sometimes. Hubby is thinking is thinking about get a live trap to reduce the population of the racoons a bit. My daughter counted 12 of them crossing the street a few weeks ago, one of which was a mama with 6 babies. I don't think bird netting would be effective against those pesky critters. We will need bird netting for the blueberry bushes. I saw three cardinals decimate one plant for their breakfast one day.

@Crystalannj Johnson, I honestly do not understand where this internet misinformation came from but Vinegar does not remove stains, or improve the performance of a Soaking or Wash Solution. I will say, it will remove certain rust stains, but beyond that, you are neutralizing Detergent instead of increasing performance by adding it. Baking Soda, on the other hand does improve performance, but it's so minimal it's not really worth adding. Borax would be a much stronger additive and better product, if someone was trying to remove Odors. Lastly, mixing Baking Soda & Vinegar doesn't accomplish literally anything. You are just watching the effects of two chemical agents, neutralize each other. If you were going to do this again, I would suggest just using the Persil Alone, or adding something like OxiClean or Biz Laundry Booster instead of Baking Soda. And whatever you do, do not Soak Clothes in Chlorine Bleach for extended periods of time.

I actually have cookie recipes that call for part cornstarch, part flour--and they're delicious. Actually I like the taste better than all flour for cookies and sometimes do that even in recipes that don't call for cornstarch. But a teaspoon or two of cornstarch wouldn't make any difference in the taste. Either the kids are reacting to your telling them something is different, or you maybe made another mistake, too? As to the baking soda you left out of your cookies--yes, it's Baking Soda in CC cookies because they're made with brown sugar (baking soda is used in recipes that contain acid--Brown sugar does). Cookies don't rise that much. Many have no leavening agent at all. Leaving the baking soda out will not ruin your cc's--I never use more than half of it, because the full amount gives that awful, chemical baking soda taste. Your cookies may be more shortbreadlike, but definitely don't throw them away--they're still edible.

I use baking soda and a damp cloth to clean our stainless steel kitchen sink. I am not a fan of stainless, but since it was here when we bought the place, I'm stuck with it. The only thing I have found that makes it look good is baking soda.
I also put about 1/2 c. in with the kitty litter. No matter how good the litter is at absorbing odors, a little baking soda helps it along.
I have found, however, that an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator does nothing to eliminate odors.

We have used baking soda for upset stomaches, for the kitty litter box, to clean out pipes, to clean the battery post on the car, to scrub the dishes and as an additive to the laundry.

My great- grandfather once told me that he put baking soda on his brothers yard as a joke. He said that it made the grass grow (quicker I guess). Well that made me curious so I did the same thing to our lawn, low and behold the area that I put the baking soda on grew a lot quicker than the other grass. That was about 18 years ago when gas was a lot cheaper.....

I keep soda in one of the shaker jars like you see in restaurants for cheese. I have seen lists of uses for soda, one said drink some, but was warned it's not good for you. My stomach doctor doesn't like me to use it for indigestion, but I do occasionally.

Sheesh, stupid typos! meant to say it gets rid of the smell from the buildup...

And I guess even I don't know about more ideas for baking "sods"!

I use BS most for cleaning my glass-top stove. I've never tried the store-bought products for burnt-on spots. Just a little sprinkle of BS, damp washcloth, and the burnt is gone.

My second use is if DD (3 yrs old) or the cat pukes on the carpet. BS liberally on the spot, let it soak up excess liquid. Scrape that up. Pour on vinegar & let it foam. Scrub up.

Oh, and for the stainless steel sinks, I read somewhere to use white flour to shine up the sink. I've found flour or baking soda give the same final result.
