OK, let's resuscitate this thing. How about a committment to post one question, idea or suggestion every week or two? If people come here and see all old posts, it does not encourage one to stay and keep checking on it only to see nothing new.

I am going to give it a month, then if we don't get active, I'm moving on or I should say back to the cottage forum - my fav. Come visit us there. We have the basic cottage garden forum with a discussion side where any topic goes and a gallery and pay is optional. All things to consider.

As our population ages, I think this forum will become more and more important. Also as more younger people, with more computer experience, I think it will be more important.

OK. I'll start with a new question. What else do you think will become more important as our population ages?

Is there anyone out there who wants to visit about it. Pull up a chair, have a cuppa joe and type your thots away.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Thanks for the resuscitation...I can breath again...

I do think there will be many changes as the population ages...Some probably quite dramatic...But it will evolve slowly giving us all a chance to adjust to the new surroundings...Hopefully!

O.K., lets try to post at least once a week. Was in a store yesterday and the woman ahead of me at the checkout paid with a Carte Blanche card. Hadn't seen one of those in years. Didn't even know they were still around. Sort of like Diners Club not sure when it vanished but don't remember seeing it either. We just use American Express so we have to pay it off every month. Therefore we are careful not to charge more than we can comfortably pay off.

Calvin I also dont care for Oncidiums. I dont understand them. I try to like them but every time i look at them im just like eh, Phrag Besseae I like, but paphs make me think of flies! Also im Very afraid of spiders! so i dont like paphs big pouches a spider is going to get in there and get on my face when i bend down look at the flower i just know it will happen so No, No Pouches! Im also not a fan of Disa and Zygos, bulbos,or dendrochilum Harlequin Phals or ones with a bunch of spotting. Peloric anything. When you say "DEEP" soak, what does that mean? How do I test that it's got a good drink of water? I know I shouldn't allow it to get too wet, either. ===>>> your soil in your yard is unique to YOU .... go dig a hole somewhere ... maybe two or 3 ... maybe a foot wide.. by a foot deep .. and fill it with the garden hose .. right to the top .... and then time how long it take to drain away ... in my yellow sand.. that would be about 5 minutes ... MAX ... in hard clay.. 5 days ... lol ... and that is basically the 2 extremes of drainage ... leaving out a theoretical thesis of soil dynamics .... if you have clay.. then you will see that potential for over watering.. because there is no where for the excess to go .... if you have clay .. then start a new post.. or use the SEARCH function to bone up on dealing with such .... now.. as to your bushes in particular .... get a hand trowel.. small shovel.. whatever ... run you sprinkler.. then go out.. and dig a small hole under the canopy of your plant ... i will bet.. your sprinkler most likely has watered the top 1/8 inch of your soil ... and tht is not where a majority of its roots are.. and why it is struggling this season .. [and BTW it might never happen again...due to seasonal fluctuations from year to year] if we want to rescue your droughted shrub .. we will have to dampen the soil down into where the roots are.. and most likely that is at least a foot or two down ... so you put the hose on a trickle for an hour.. and then go dig another hole.. and see what happens down deep .. if you havent gotten a foot down.. run it for another hour .... again.. we can not really speculate because we dont have your soil .... but in anything short of clay ... one last thought... you garden beds could have been amended ... so you might need a hole to find out if the soil is different in the beds.. than elsewhere ... no one ever said knowledge didnt hurt.. a little hard work involved here.. lol does that help???? good luck ken

Ah well -- here's a picture of why a simmer plate may yet be desirable: This is what greeted me at 5:30am after I had arisen at 4am to stick some oatmeal on the stove, on simmer, unattended, in preparation for rapid downing of the stuff on the way out the door by 5am of the swimmer. The goo was unattended, on simmer. Mangiamo - your keen eyes are correct, that photo did have the knob set at about level 2 -- I needed to turn it up from simmer in order to cook high enough. This was while I was standing over the pot, periodically stirring and it was also uncovered. The subsequent early-morning iteration was unattended, covered and set to simmer - all the way down. It does not click at all at the bottom, simmer setting. Perhaps because the intensity of the burning fuel as it escapes is stronger than previously, even on simmer, there are next to no sporadic clicks either. So my working hypothesis is that my own calibrations are immensely better. The clicking is not a problem. Getting a low-enough temperature is a reasonable expectation. But turning my back on some materials may yet still be not possible. It's possible the protocol for this may yet be tweaked, it's possible it will turn out to be something you can never do. Hopefully the simmer plate Capital has "in the oven", as it were, will mitigate this? I've never used one so can't say. And I don't know whether we can absolutely count on the production of promised simmer plates coming to pass, I suppose. So ... still tweaking here! Hi to my Smaller Homes friends! I appreciate your support and care more than you can know. I have been working toward a weight loss diet since the first of the year. I need to lose almost 200 lbs. In the past I have done liquid protein diets, both without and with other foods. This time, I am going to use the liquid protein to replace some meals and to use between my smaller meals. I figure that doing weight loss this way is a more sustainable way, and that I will likely need to use the liquid protein for some meals the rest of my life. Falling into the fast-food/drive-through habit is too easy for me, since I am on the road for my job. If I can leave the house with a liquid protein packet making a nice cappucino-like drink in home-brewed coffee, I won't be stopping for breakfast with bacon and white-flour breading. That saves a few hundred calories right there! I am trying to leave some snacking (a few individual Dove chocolates at night, a handful of pretzels, some air-popped popcorn) in my diet so that I learn to eat the way I always revert to - but with moderation, instead. DH is the sodium-sleuth, and since he does most of the shopping, I can eat low sodium if I do not sabotage his efforts! We still get take-out, but mostly Middle Eastern, and I get salads with some meat most of the time. So that is my plan - to establish better habits overall, use liquid protein drinks to keep my nutrition up, and eat fewer calories while avoiding sodium and white carbs. I started PT this week. We started with my ankles because that is where the worst pain is. Stan, my PT Man (a genius!) first studied my walk and added to my orthotics (he made them) to correct my left foot's roll. I am doing strengthening exercises, too. Next is my elbows, then my hand. Once I am done with the PT, I plan to get into that nice warm pool at the community center of a nearby suburb a few days a week to work out in the water. I am walking almost as fast as I used to walk as I cruise through my nursing homes, but get out of breath. No major heart pains since the one I had in my first week back at work. I am working to recognize my patterns of tension, worry, and stress. I drive around doing deep, slow breathing exercises and relaxing my shoulders! My biggest, best, and most time consuming change has been working my sauna into my schedule. I have done 30 to 60 minute sessions before bed, a 40 minute session as soon as I got home for work, and even a short 15 minute session before showering to go to work. It feels SO GOOD! I wake up without stiffness if I use it at night. As a matter of fact, it is warmed up for me now, and I am going to go indulge in a full hour in the baking, far-infrared 130 degree little cabin in our smallest bedroom right now!

As we age and there are fewer people in the workforce, the number of contributors to pension plans relatiive to the number withdrawing will become much smaller - so some pension plans will be in jeopardy.

As we develop a larger population of aged, we'll have much greater demands on the medical system.

I noticed that Australia has mounted a successful campaign to get people to have larger families so that there will be enough young people to support their elders. We can do that or open our borders to more people. I think that's the two choices we have.

With age I am enjoying several new passions: exercise, geneaology, and religion. I have learned Hebrew to read the OT and plan to learn Greek to better read the NT

pil, yes, we do need time to adjust. Our town is growing by leaps and bounds - not really time to adjust. Don't know where all the money comes from for those huge homes. Sure glad I'm not the one behind the sweeper.

I agree, I don't want debt that I can't pay within the month. Any more is like throwing money away, in by book.

joyfulguy - love your name, but I will type just "ful." Always short on time and try to keep things rollin'. I think the med syst is moanin' and groanin' already and not cus it is halloween season. Too many law suits have doctors running. I know several who quit there OB practices cuz of it and others who are leaving certain areas of the country cuz the suits are terrible. We sure need a cap put on them.
But then there is the quality of care too. I have been in the hospital for a couple of surgeries and it was so bad that my DH insisted on staying by my bed overnite to make sure things were being done right. I caught them in multiple errors myself. Woe, be us, just when we will need more and more med care.
I feel for our DD and fam. They don't think there will be SS for them and they are probably right, no pensions and not enuf now to save, barely enuf to live on at that.

bb, I don't think our DDs are alone, I don't think they could possibly afford more children - that would be a purely selfish solution in many cases. I don't know about opening the borders. That has two sides to it - mite take jobs away from the marginally employed now.

I wasn't seriously proposing a population explosion or throwing open the borders, but it is an issue that will have to be faced and many other countries, Japan for example, are scrambling to find the answer. I think there will be a major shift in populations throughout the world and that we will have far more "guest" workers than ever before.
