Comments (150)Breezy I went to Fireclay and Heath Today to finalize my own backsplash. Some info for your consider. Heath tile - several of their glazes have some copper in them. They are all about using traditional natural materials. But this also means that the tile glaze can etch! I tried it with some of the green tiles I had and sure enough I was able to etch a couple of them with lemon juice. I was really disappointed and even considered if I can live with it.. Patina and all that. But I could see the spots in the undercabinet light and DH hated the etches. So reluctantly I have given up the wide hex twist with 3 colors with glossy and matte that I had fallen in love with :( This is not to say that this won't work for you. Not all of their glazes etch. Depending on the colors you want, call Eric their tile manager and see what will work. One more thing - some of their tiles are dark clay body and others are white clay. As the glaze has a lot of dimension, the colors really work better if you select all white clay or all dark clay. Fireclay - Debris series is dark clay body and Vitrail is light clay. Again not advisable to mix tiles between the two. Debris is also a tad thicker tile. Vitrail depending on the color has some crackle in it. It is all organic and not exactly the same. As the tiles have a handmade quality to them, it looked like you can't really get a small tight grout line. Not sure how important this is for you. I finally have decided on backsplash tile from fireclay and have placed my order. They also have this thinner super large format tile that was just awesome. May work in a contemporary kitchen like yours. Lots of zen like colors and you can definitely get small tight grout lines with these. Yolanda who works there is very knowledgeable and helpful. Comments (8)Hi, qshopper and gadgets, Guess I forgot to say that I DO fund my Roth IRA faithfully, for the full amount, annually. Thankfully, someone wiser than I set me up with a TSA person years ago. Of course, after a while, that person's quote of "they don't put teachers in jail" made me wonder just what kinds of monkey business he was doing with my money, so I got a new TSA person. I'm always telling new teachers to pay themselves first by getting a TSA. I'm still trying to get my sister to set one up, but oh, she is soooo busy! Well, now she's 48 and maybe she thinks she's gonna win the lottery, but really, that's not likely! I was wondering about dollar cost averaging and investing in no-load funds--stuff I can do myself, and wondered if anyone else had some advice about things like that...I just learning and one of my cyberpals is talking me thru it...just wondered what everyone else may know... Thanks!...See MoreIN Retirement calculator

Comments (7)Hi Doug, I think that you are more courageous than I. Better start taking lessons now ... ... in how to cope with a teen when you are aged almost 80. I'm there now ... and glad that I don't have a teen to cope with daily. I think that one of my major tasks as a parent is to help my child prepare for independence. I grew up on a fairly large farm during World War II ... when the farmhands had all gone to war shortly after it started in 1939, when I was 10. I had lots of responsibilities, and increasing ones, to deal with from a rather young age. I'm of the opinion that if a child grows up knowing that as s/he shows him/herself able to cope reasonably well with responsibilities formerly given, that s/he knows that more will be granted, that much of the teen-age rebellion that troubles many might be, if not avoided, at least mitigated somewhat. Good wishes for a flourishing life. ole joyful...See Moremaime
