We should have bought property at Smith Mtn. Lake near Roanoke Virginia years ago when it was still affordable. Does anyone know of any other areas similar that are still affordable? We will consider Virginia, Tenn., N. Carolina, Georgia,- anyplace that doesn't have a winter like NE Ohio where we are currently living. We'd love a place on a lake to enjoy our retirment.

We live in FL, but own a hoome in Sylva, NC, which is in the mountain and lakes region of Western North Carolina. There is Fontana Lake, Lake Chatuge, and a few other lakes near Hayesville, NC on the NC/GA line. Mild climate and friendly people. Check out www.FloridaHalfbacks.com for a few more ideas - its a website about mountain and lake regions in the SE US with real estate and places to stay info.

There is a wonderful lake/golf community on Lake Oconee in Georgia. It is approximately 45 minutes east of Atlanta. It is called Reynolds Plantation. There are also other lake/golf communities as well but RP is the highest quality by far. If you are not golfers, there are other communities which feature lake front living without golf. Water's Edge is an excellent example. Most of the folks living there are from other parts of the country. In fact, many retirees have moved there from Florida...

Try RedTail Mountain in Mountain City, TN. Great Golf, Fly Fishing, Hiking, and no state income tax. If you arent familiar with it is about 20 minutes from Boone, NC.
