Feel guilty retiring

I retired at 60 due to an early retirement package from where I worked. If I didn't take it I would have lost many benefits if I did retire at a later date. I would have kept working until who knows when if this package wasn't offered.

It will be 2 yrs since I retired. I have to say I love retirement. But at the same time I feel guilty I'm not working. I had a great job before in IT but it was very stressful. I keep looking at other IT jobs and have almost taken them and then backed down. Why go back to that stress.

I've thought about fun jobs but they don't pay enough to bother. I've done the volunteer work but then I put so much into it that I make it stressful for myself.

I've started a couple businesses but don't seem to have the desire to make them successful.

Everyone keeps asking me what I do all day. I feel guilty if I don't have something I'm working on. I feel since I am healthy I should be working.

I guess I can't accept the fact that my career may be over. I also feel if I am not working I may not keep mentally sharp.

Has anyone else struggled with this issue?

Goldie50, it sounds like you had a wonderful opportunity and took it, good for you! All those years when you were working, did you ever wish you had the time to take an "extended vacation" somewhere? Now's the time when you can pack up and go "exploring" if that's something you enjoy. Or maybe you'd like to take a class about something you are interested in, or start a new hobby, or maybe become a mentor to someone younger who's just getting into the field you were in? Lots of possibilities, just have to find the right niche for you. Best wishes, Luvstocraft

Don't ever feel guilty about early retirement. Your health is important to you and your family.
I too was "forced" into that, but not the same way. My supervisor was a jerk and kept threatening to fire me so to keep my benefits I retired. These are some of the things I did. Went back to a Jr. College (community college) and took some fun courses. Learned how to quilt, did counted cross stitching, did lots of outside work, but we did have 5 acres up in the mountains. Had chickens- visited a bit. Joined a women's Bible study, able to travel more with hubby as he had more time off that I did. Little more active in the church. Worked on some hobbies--learned a few new ones. Things I wish I had done--completed the college courses, like painting, etc, done more tours and if you have no hubby etc, there are wonderful short tours for single thru AAA, Country Life etc. Some are just day tours. Volunteer in museums, did not enjoy hospital work or school unless it was keeping records, Hope this helps
We had alot of quail, squirrels, blue jays etc so kept busy feeding them especially in the winter with snow on the ground. Loved just sitting in a chair, watching them bring the families up to feed. So quite. Oh yes, I would do more photography and scrapbooking etc, making cards etc.

Dear Kate. Thanks for your encouraging words. When I first made this post I said no one understood my grief, I didn't mean the people on this thread of course everyone here dose understand that's why we came here. I cannot talk about TJ without tearing up and hardly can talk. It has helped me in so many ways to talk about him. I have never felt this way about any person or animal. I just can't explain why? This little dog has meant so much to my life and now he's gone, I feel so empty. The person on this site said if you do not have a connection with a animal there is something missing in your soul. Truer words were never spoken I might have been one of thoses people because it has taken me 71 years to feel this way. I have had other animals,Cats, Dogs: None of them has affected me this way. TJ consumed me in a way I have never known with love and devotion. When I would have to go out shopping, my wife would look after him. TJ would not stay in the house he would go to the garage and waite for me to come back, looking through the screen. When I came back he was jumping up and down at the screen he would run out to greet me and lick and kiss me for two minutes at least, that is just one of the memories I have of his love for me. Kate, I read your responce to Mike about losing his Maltese, everything you said to him was just how I feel. I know you loved Homer very much, it shows in evry word you speak. LIFE HAS A WAY OF TEACHING YOU A LESSON...And I learned one. I am 71 years old and retired. I have a wonerdful wife married 52 years and three grown kids who are all doing well. My middle son lives in Alaska (A State trooper.) with his wife and two Boys. My Daughter lives in Chicage. My other so lives in Atlanta, His wife will be having their first child in August. Cs is up to the bioparent. They're responsibility. And any parent who depends on the ex new wife or husband for hand me outs has real issue here. CS should come from the father. Now if his job is not giving him hours, the bobaty why hasn't your husband got at least a parttime job else where? And i do agree with one thing colleens stated, and i completely forgot to mention it too because my husband said it as well. WHy is your husband telling financial details about the selling of your mothers house? He had no business telling her that. If my husband told his ex i did that and she expected money from him and yes she is like this too. oh you dont have the money, why cant you borrow money from maria. She's said that a number of times and low and behold so has sd. My response: I AM NO ONES FREAKIN' BANK! If your dad doesnt have the money then the money is not there. What did your mom do with the 500 bucks he gave her this time?? ' Money to me is a touchy subject because i work my butt off and so does my hubby , money doesn't grow on trees. And as i was saying before if my hubby told ex that i sold my place i would be livid. That is not her business. My husband ex at the beginnning would call me his rich girlfriend. Yup, i have money, i save , i'm a non smoker so i dont trash 300$ in the garbage per month for a cancer habit. I dont live beyond my means. and have reserves in case of emergencies. I bailed my husband out thousands of dollars because he put himself in debt. WHich i got back because he paid me back slowly all these years. That was a one deal thing andi will not do it again. I love my husband , dont get me wrong but i will not support his ex family especially after all the Cr*p the exwife put us through. I wont be used in that manner And yes i agree with you vivian. after courts, and accusations and games, you dont have any love for the other woman causing hell in your life so its her tough if she can't make ends meet especially with the amount my dh dishes for her. SHE can make the decision to change her life. 1. quite smoking and using pot 2. go find a new job to support your family . 3. get respect from your new husband and tell him to stop treating your kids so poorly. And yes, believer i would also like to know if CS is being paid for the daughter living with you guys. That being said, if ex and my hubby were best of friends, and we were all working together for the kids, and she was short because of too many bills and needed a loan, than i would not mind giving a friend a loan of cash especially if one of her kids were sick or had a cavity to fill and needed the cash and she would pay me back. I wont let the kid suffer. BUt we are not friends. SHe ditched me from the beginning and she trashed both my husband and i from the beginning and worst of all she directs it at the kids and they know its not us!...so god knows what they will think of their mom when they are older. I wont be her doormatt. No way. She can dust herself off and get a job. As for this case, i think bobaty you did the right thing for your sick sd but dont let your finances feed the ex. You are already tight as it is with two jobs and 4 kids inthe house. You must so tired at times.

Hello everybody, Unfortunately, I am having a relapse triggered by a family fight I had today. As I mentioned in my first post, my relationship with my mom is not good and she is very disrispectful with my stuff and has thrown away very special things to me. Things that I really treasured. Today, I picked up a carped that my mom had removed almost a year ago. She wanted to throw it away, but the carpet was in good condition and I liked it, so I took it to a place to have it washed and storaged. Today I finally got it back home and put it behind a wall in my living room. It was well hidden and it wasn't taking too much room. My mom saw it and started acting like crazy and told me she was going to throw it away tomorrow. I got angry and she started telling me that I had my stuff all over the house, which is not true, and then mentioned that the fact I put my little dog's stuff, like his plate and little bones in the laundry room was a problem for her to. This made me get very angry and I went down the stairs because I wanted to make sure my dog's stuff were safe. suddenly, my uncle, who was at home for a visit, stood up and got between me and my mother because according to him he thought I was going to hit my mom, which is a terrible lie. He dared me to fight and I told him I was not going to accept his attitude in my house. Then he asked me to go outside and I said: OK. Let's go. Next, my brother showed up and my mom to avoid the fight. Then my brother told me he didn't want to fight because he was much heavier than me and that it was going to be easy for him. I said: Come on, let0's do it. And he refused it and said he loved me. Ever since my parents divorced he has interfered in many of my family's issues that are not concer of his and sometimes he has tried to act like the man of the house. Today was the last straw and made me lose my mind. He has brainwashed my mom several times, my mom almost always does what he tells her to do and of course, he usually takes my moms side. All this conflict made me have a psychiological crisis and miss my little dog a lot since I feel very alone again and I have no friend and partner at home to rely on. I really didn't need this since I was starting to feel better about the loss of my beautiful Guyton, to heal, to rearrange my life without suffering too much and feel more peace. On top of that, my Psychiatrist took the liberty to show my mom and my brother my diagnosis file after a visit my mom and my brother made to his office, which was a terrible violation to my privacy and to the confidentiality respect Mental professionals have to have. It's the most basic and important rule. Now, my mom is using this as a weapon and threatening me to send me to a mental hospital because my Psychiatrist also told her and my brother she could do that. It is just unbelievable. He betrayed me and put me in a very difficult position. Specially now that I am trying to overcome the death of my little dog and my mind is unstable. It just looks he also took my brother's and mom's side and they are their patiens not me. Now I am missing Guyton a lot again and their loss became bigger again too. I am lost and sad again. I really hope you can reply to me. Thank you very much in advance for your help and kindness

At one time I felt sad trowing away pieces of plant from dividing, or left over annuals I'd grown from seed or extra produce from the garden. I'd always try to find someone to give them to. I think I was thinking about myself when I first started gardening and would have welcomed someone else's cast offs. However that wore thin after a while. I'd ask if people wanted them and they'd say yes but would never show up or they wanted them at their convenience. Potting up someone else's plants left me short of pots and soil and the time to do the work. With garden produce it was wishy-washy responses of not now maybe next week. Now I may ask but I specify the time and say if you don't come then they'll be in the compost. I certainly don't feel in the least guilty any more. If the plants don't go to someone they are making me compost to nourish other plants and saving me money. That is the cycle of life and gardeners know that better than anyone

Yes, I "retired" without a package! I actually quit working 10 years ago. I am your age now. I live in a small town and the salary was just not sufficient to keep working.

Then, I worked part time in a frame shop, I am an artist so thought that would benefit me = it did, I learned to cut mats. And felt that I could offer benefits as well with my color vision, art to frames.

Sometimes I get bored, but I have friends and we get together to paint. I taught painting through community clubs and the local college continuing education.

I also enjoy doing puzzles on line (AARP has some brain work outs).

Our hospital has a program of volunteers (to push wheelchairs, give directions, etc); that senior group goes on lots of trips.

The other posters gave great advice about getting involved in activities. You have to "train" your self to do things, just like you trained yourself to do your job.

You worked, now have some fun!

You are not alone in feeling guilty in your present state. So much of who we are and how we see ourselves is wrapped up in our jobs.

Your new" job" is enjoying the incredible opportunities and blessings being retired offers you. First, accept the gift of your situation. There are millions upon millions of people who would trade places with you in a second.

Secondly, there are excellent suggestions offered above. May I make one more: I have a blog that is written for people just like you. The purpose is to help you create an exciting and satisfying retirement life.

If you want, please visit and start reading through all the articles that look like they might interest you, especially the series on the various stages of retirement. You will find them in the archives in July. It sounds as if you are in Stage two....very common...and not permanent.

In any case, know that what you are going through is not uncommon or everlasting.

One thing about the fun jobs that you dismiss because they don't pay enough, although they may not pay much if they are something you are interested in go for it. If you volunteer you are working for nothing other than possible tax deductions. Think of the fun jobs as extra coffee breaks. You would be taking a break from your daily activities, unless as it sometimes happens the cost of going to one of them is more than your pay, just getting out of the house could be worth it.

I retired in January 2009 and have not looked back. I am 72 and having the time of my life! I am active in Civil Air Patrol, a railroad society, and I do data reduction and help with a food kitchen for the needy.
I have recently remarried after losing my wife of 30 years, and my new wife and I love to travel.
I will also be helping low income people prepare their tax returns next year.
One of the things that brought me up short was when I read a quotation as follows:
Figure your net income while working, then figure your net income when you retire-you are only working for the difference!!

It sounds like youÃ¯Â¿Â½re not finding an activity that makes you happy. Look hard enough and you will find it. I too retired early but felt bored/guilty for only about three seconds.
