Canada or European Health Insurance??

Posted by phoggie (My Page) on

I am so worried about the possibility of the USA getting a national health insurance. I have heard horror stories about this....taking months to see a Dr., more months for surgery etc., age limit as to who gets care..... Is this true? Let me know some of your thoughts and experiences with your care.........also how much more do you pay in taxes for this coverage?
THANKS....and I am so hoping that it does not pass here!!! I am so used to being able to get right into a doctor or surgeon and immediately get things taken care of that is needed. I have Medicare and a supplemental BC/BS policy and want to keep it that way.

phoggie:

If I could say one thing it would be don't worry, but that won't help so instead I'll tell you about our health care here in Canada.

First--You're health care won't change much if at all. I remember when we first got OHIP--Ontario health insurance policy--we were as aprehensive as many Americans are now.

How health care works in Canada:
Money for health care comes out of Federal general revenue. We pay a bit more than you in income tax, a lot more than you in taxes on cigarettes and other things deemed a drain on health care. The federal government distributes this money to the provinces who in turn pay it to doctors and hospitals.

There is no age limit or any other restrictions on who gets health care. If you are a Canadian citizen you are covered from the cradle to the grave.

There are no horror stories any more than there are in your country. The thing is that here all our wait times are monitored and published. No one knows what yours are they are not monitored or published.

We can go to any doctor--GP or specialist-- we choose. If I don't like the wait times in my town I can go to another town or city. My neighbor just had a knee replacement. It took 6 weeks to see a specialist and have the surgery done. I've heard of people in the States waiting longer than that, and my neighbor paid not one penny for anything.

As for waiting to see your doctor or specialist. It depends on how many patients he has. Our one big problem is that a gung-ho politican cancelled spaces at medical schools a while back and now we have a shortage of doctors, but this has nothing to do with our health care. If we had more doctors there would be no waiting times at all.

All basic health care is covered--visits to any medical doctor. Ward care and anything that is done in a hospital and drugs administered by the hospital. It covers eye exams for seniors and children and anyone who has an eye disease or condition like diabetes that may cause vision problems. It covers most tests, blood work. MRI's, CAT and PET scans.

Many people have supplimental insurance to cover things like semi-private hospital rooms, physiotherapy, eye glasses, dental and drugs.

There is really nothing to worry about. If the USA follows some of the things the countries who have health care and customizes it to your country., you're health care will stay much the same. The only ones who will lose out is the big for profit health insurance companies. Who do you think is doing all the fear mongering in your country--They don't want to see their cash cow disappear.

Joyful Guy....would like to hear your opinion on National Health Care in Canada and your experiences with it. I live in the USA. THANK YOU.

RE: Canada or European Health Insurance??

Thanks oilpainter for your reply. With so many stories around the USA of what possibly we might have happen, that it is really scarey!!! Also what is your tax rate to pay for this insurance? I don't smoke, so that certainly would not be a concern......in fact, I'd appreciate it...it may make some quit~~~

I do have a friend in the UK that has waited 2 years to get a knee replacement (and still hasn't had it)....that is the kind of thing that really worries me...I have had a hip replacement within 6 weeks of my first surgeon visit.....and need two knees done and a back surgery in the future.

Let us here in the US hear more from Canadians and those who live in the UK.........and yes, Joyful Guy, let's hear from you. You are always so informative~~

Thanks again.

RE: Canada or European Health Insurance??

No one says you are going to have health care exactly like the UK or Canada or any one of the countries that have universal health care. Yours will be tailored to your country.

I just looked up the average waiting time for knee replacements in the UK and the most you would wait in the UK for knee replacement surgery is 4.6 months down in the last 3 years from 6 months. Either your friend isn't actually pursuing a knee replacement or he has a lousy doctor and needs to find a new doctor. You can't blame the health care system for a Doctors incompetence.

As for how ours is financed--70 % is paid for by the 2 levels of government--federal and provincial. The rest is paid for by the workers on their income tax. This amount varies from 300 to 1500 dollars a year depending on where you live and is geared to income, so you pay less if you make less.

Just consider what your government already pays for medicare. How much more effective would it be if everybody was covered.

I really wish I could plug you into my mind and let you know what I know, but I can't--so I will wish you well

Something to think about

Regardless what you have read in American paper and TV and blogs, Here's the facts from Canada.

85% of Canadians are very or somewhat satisfied with our health care system--by poll.

There is a general panic whenever your HMO's try to get into our country.

Does that sound like our health care is bad? Wouldn't we want your health care if it were better than ours?
