Update on My Retirement

I posted back in February asking about the feasibility of cleaning houses parttime when I retired from teaching. Well, I DID retire in May from teaching school. However, I retired 14 days earlier than I had intended. I fell at work and broke both bones in my left ankle and left school, alright, in an AMBULANCE! LOL Needless to say, I was pretty immobile for several weeks. Exactly a month to the day after I fell, I went to work at my new parttime job - on a walker! LOL I'm working at an In-Patient Rehab at the local hospital. I enter data into the computer for the rehab. I'm working three five hour mornings and I really like it! Seems strange to be working during the summer, but with only three mornings a week, it's really nice.

Still thinking about cleaning a house or two and probably will, when I'm not still limping! Just wanted you guys to rejoice with me in my "semi" retirement! LOL

Sorry to hear about your accident but glad to hear of your new part time job. I will probably have to find a part time job when I retire,which I hope will be in less than a year. I hope you will mend quickly so you can enjoy your retirement. Judith

There has been a new plum tree called BlackIce developed by the UW-River Falls that is supposed to be as good as the California plums. This year it is now available to the public and can be purchased from Jungs Nursery. I have ordered one, since I only live 15 miles from River Falls, so assume it would do well here. Also the new honeyberries known as haskaps that have been developed in Saskatchewan are available in the U.S. for the first time this year. See my post from a few days back. They are supposed to be much better than the honeyberries previously available in the U.S. There are also some bush cherries known as the Romance Series developed at Saskatchewan that are highly touted. Only Carmen Jewel is available in the U.S. so far; and St.Lawrence Nursery in Potsdam, New York, had Crimson Passion for a couple years, but no longer. I am hoping more of the half dozen varieties available only in Canada will soon be available here. These should all be quite hardy where you are; and the honeyberries and bush cherries are supposed to be fairly low maintenance. New introductions don't always pan out to what they are cracked up to be, but the Canadian gardeners have given them good reviews on the forums. The haskaps would ripen at a time before most other fruits, which is another bonus, and when the other bush cherries become available, they have staggered ripening times for different varieties, too. You won't want to be tied down to an extensive spraying program and spending your whole time canning and freezing when you retire, so with low maintenance items, if you are gone on a trip or experiencing health problems, you can just tell a friend or relative to pick the fruit, but they won't care to do any spraying, pruning, or weeding. Also, with bushes you won't have to contend with ladders when you are old and your knees get decrepit. I can't imagine how retirees could eat 50 trees worth of apples, either, unless you will have lots of grandkids around or plan to sell them. I would go for zone 3 blueberries if I were you, like Chippewa, Polaris, or St. Cloud. That is smart of you to prepare the soil in advance. There are pears that should grow fine where you are, too, but it can be a long wait for the tree to mature. I have Summercrisp, Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favorite, and Luscious, but none have fruited yet. Summercrisp is supposed to be entirely free of fireblight, very early, and quite hardy. I am also growing lingonberries, as they are very good for you, plus are a nice ground cover and can take a little afternoon shade. Your van cherries might be questionable. You might even be on the fringe of where montmorency will fruit consistently. If I were you, I would try just one of each to start with. I have a Lapins going on its third year now and figure if I get fruit even every third year I will be thrilled. Have also ordered a Kristin, which is supposedly hardier than the other varieties of sweet cherries. Also, avoid dwarf trees this far north, as they aren't as hardy. Semidwarf is okay for apples, but otherwise standard are recommended. With all the space you have, you might experiment with a couple apricots. Westcot, Jerseycot (if you can find one), Sugar Pearl might fruit for you at least some years. And of couse, there are the old standbys of strawberries and raspberries, which will give you fruit the first year. Don't forget to fence against the deer and rabbits, and net against the birds, which can cost more than purchasing the trees. Best wishes with your fruit adventures. Northwoodswis

Ok, Jim, its finally time to go to your place. I want to see what you have done. I have nothing but time now. I will be in Rockport in two weeks and will stay a week or two, so please email me, and I will drive down to meet you. I can't wait to see your oleanders, I know you have been working on making the perfect oleander for down there. Have you created it yet? Did you loose any palm trees? We lost all our Cuban Royals, Alexander and Bottle palm trees. Russ, I lost all my daylies to rust about 3 years ago, it made me sick. I had to wait 3 years, replaced all the soil to make sure that there were no signs. I am starting again in October, I have a hugh order coming in from Maryott's Gardens. What do you use to control the rust. Everything that I have been told to get by Maryott's I am not able to find in Texas. I brought the rust to my garden, but ordering from a nursery that was not rust free. I think I will be ok, I will just order from Maryott's, I never had a problem when I ordered just from them. Thanks, everyone, for your kind wishes. To answer mntrdredux's question, I worked for a local real estate development firm. We developed, constructed, owned and managed apartments, condos, shopping centers, hotels, office buildings and industrial properties. I started as the secretary-receptionist and retired as vice president. I had a lot of room to grow, much autonomy and an employer who believed that I could do almost anything and if I could't, he knew I would find someone who could. It was a great career.

dchall_san_antonio: What I think is hilarious is that I already answered your question of 10ft ceilings up thread and yet you are asking again for some reason. Here's what I said" They want the grand feeling that 10 ft ceilings offer. And yes, my Dad is 6'5." Not to mention 10 ft ceilings are more efficient to cool in warm climates as you correctly assumed the home will be in. But someone in the appraisal business should already know that, right? So does that mean you can give back the 15 yard penalty now? Let me correct you on a few more items. Don't assume my parents will not use an outdoor kitchen. They have one now and it is used at least twice a week in nice weather. Now that they will be moving to a warm climate it will be used even more. I clearly said they thought this home was a "good value" as they want to put a lot of money into a boat with storage and the pool area. So the assumption that "money is no object " is absurd. I talked about and the plan shows a large linen closet near bedrooms 2 and 3. And a linen cabinet in the Master bath. So to say "One linen shelf for four bedrooms and three bedrooms is not enough. " is again, incorrect. The great room plan is 25'4" x 17' 9". So wrong on that point as well. Wow, you must be up to at least a 50 yard penalty for all the incorrect assumptions and lack of comprehension!

I agree with Heather. I didn't like handling money in stores, I certainly don't want to be in someone's home when they are not there. If anything came up missing, I would be the natural suspect.

I'm wondering - how surprised were you at the development of the new job?

And at your reaction to it - and obvious pleasure in it.

One of the interesting things with regard to the workforce is that as things become more computerized, there are more openings for people with physical restrictions.

While I'm sorry that you had the misfortune of the accident, I'm gratified that you haven't let it get you down.

A question - do you find that many teachers are finding that they are becoming too stressed to continue? Or fearing that they may not be able to cope much longer?

Good wishes in your new career.

Hi, all, just now getting back to "hosting my post"! LOL

A former co-worker had asked me back last Nov. if I was really intending to retire from teaching and when I told her I was, she said that she thought she had an offer that I would be interested in pursuing. She was right and they basically "held" the job for me from Nov. till June. She promised me basically stress free and it is. Pay is good for this area and for me not having any prior experience.

As for teachers feeling burned out, yes, I feel that a lot of them are getting that way. The majority of the faculty in the local district have 20 years plus experience. There are not a lot of new faces applying for the few positions that open up each year. Teachers are graying fast! LOL I only hope we get a lot of worthwhile young blood into the educational system. Graduates can make so much more money going into something else and a lot of them do just that.

Ya Ya, that is wonderful that you are retired now and just working part time. I guess it feels good to know that you really don't HAVE to do it if you don't want to. I helped out a little at our local funeral home for a few days, just answering the phone, and I loved it there. It is so much different working with adults all day long. LOL Not nearly as stressful.

Well, hey, Joyful!! Just decided to check out this forum - haven't in a long time. Haven't had time since I've retired! LOL

Loved your comment concerning working at a funeral home. Teachers would esp. appreciate the peace and quiet! LOL

Still working parttime at the rehab unit - got a 4% raise!

I've sort of semi retired as off new years.I cut myself back to two 8hr shifts per week,no weekends.I have chronic back problems and standing for eight hrs 5 days a week was killing me.now I can rest up a little between shifts as I only work monday and thursday.
So far I'm really enjoying it.I miss the money,but not enough to go back full time.I still have a little "mad" money to spend,but have a cleaner house and lots of hobbies that will keep me busy.
