Valley Fever - double posting

I am posting the same message here that I posted to health because I think it belongs in both catagories. This is what I wrote:

Does anyone know anything about Valley Fever? Apparently it is caused by a fungus that is native to the soils of southern Arizona and southern California. My brother has had it for well over a year now and it doesn't appear that he will ever really recover. I can't understand why something so serious is not talked about. I haven't met one person here in the northwest who has ever heard of it and none has had any idea that they were exposing themselves to it while vacationing. It might alter my retirement plan. My brother is very short of breath and has to wear a mask to go outside. That is one heck of a way to live! I realize that not everyone gets it, but that your chance of getting it is nearly 100% over a ten year time frame. Not everyone gets really sick with it, but about 3% die and another 37% have lingering effects. This seems like major medical news to me.

If it bothers him when he goes outside, can't he move out of the area for awhile and see if he gets better.

I don't know. I don't really understand why repeated exposure would matter once it is in the lungs, but I know that they just put in a whole house air filter. My understanding is that once you recover from Valley Fever, you are immune, but he can't seem to get over it. They were up north for a week last August, but I don't know how much good it did. He has periods of being relatively well and then he just gets wiped out again. I am just so surprised that this doesn't seem to get talked about in health journals or the media.

It is also called coccidiodomycosis. It sounds to me like he needs to see an infectious specialist or go to a major medical center.
There are two forms....the most serious one is the disseminated form and can be treated with an IV antifungal agent.
Does your brother have any other lung problems such as emphysema? Does he smoke? How old is he?
I had Valley Fever when I was eight years old and I still have a spot on my lung but recovered fully.
I hope he seeks a doc who will investigate his illness fully and will treat him aggressively.
Here is a site that may give you a lot of information.

Here is a link that might be useful: Valley Fever

Thak you Carol,

My brother is 68. He never smoked or had specific lung problems but he was a preemie and has had health problems associated with that. He is feeling much better now that he has received steroids. The doctors in Arizona do seem to take the condition seriously. He never waits very long for appointments.
