When to retire?

I also posted this on the Kitchen Table forum:

If you're financially able to retire in your 50s as opposed to the traditional retirement ages (62, 65), would you do it? My DH is eligible to retire next year, when he's 55. I'll be 53. I have mixed feelings about it, and would like to hear from those who are already there

as soon as possible! myself if i had been able to retire at 25 i would have. as it is i will be able to at 55, 5 more years cant wait!

Not there yet, but I do know one needs a plan on what exactly they'll DO upon retirement. Assuming money isn't an issue, has your DH and you spoken about his plans? One can only golf so many hours in the day! (I'm sure golfers will disagree!!!)

I would not be too happy with that feeling that DH was under my feet in the kitchen looking bored all day or in front of TV. Have a talk about "next chapter, what now?" is something I'd suggest.

Nevertheless, congrats to him to have persevered as a younger fellow to reach this comfortable spot so soon! It's a good thing, if planned well, so as to be a REWARDing time for you both!

Regardless of where in New Zealand I have visited there was always something to remind me of how young this country is. Forestry is the fifth biggest industry today and everywhere you look there are planted production forests. The tree that covers many thousands of hectors of country side is Pinus radiata, the Monterey Pine from California. New Zealanders have determined the Monterey Pine that grows to lumbering maturity in a fast twenty years and is a hard enough wood to have an export value. What I found remarkable was how diverse most farmers are, for example a large sheep farm was more than likely to have a "retirement block". A retirement block is a section or block of land planted with Pinus radiata when the farmer is young with the expectation that the profits from the lumber will be a nice "nest egg". The pines are planted extremely close to one another and are limbed up through the years with intent of straight lumber with less prominent knots. Some pines those that were not limbed up would be farmed for paper. That said anyone who has ever tried to eek out a living from farming can probably appreciate that the best use of the land is certainly market driven. As recently as three years ago when the international apple market bottomed out the apple trees were removed and now wine grapes are going in everywhere I have never seen anything like it. I am happy to report that the few apple orchards around are still doing some exporting and everyone is a buzz about a new variety "Jazz" that should be ready for export soon. The approximate cost of planting grapes is $15,000.00 per acre and Pinot Noir seems to be the most sought after. One vine will produce three to five bottles and there are many smaller growers (under 30 acres). The central Otago wine region has a six winery coop where they all use the winery facilities but bring with them their own wine maker (or not) and then all have one distribution center. The explanation I received as to why I can rarely find New Zealand wine in the US but Australian wine is filling the shelves was to be reminded how small NZ is and it is just a numbers game, I was told that rather than trying to compete in volume they are focusing on quality. We were in NZ looking for land as well as general touring so we hired Robert who arranged the garden tours for me, fly fishing for Joe, meetings with Realtors and solicitors, all the while travelling the south island and experiencing the amazing beauty.

when do you retire a quilt?

My husband had a baby blanket with a very cute lion embroidered on it. It was gauzy and synthetic. His mother got it out around the time we got married, which was ten years ago. We took a photo of him holding it up. I ended up with the blanket, balled up inside a plastic shopping bag. Didn't know what to do with it. Considered framing it. Then decided that it would be best to trace the lion design, and incorporate that into a future quilt. It could be the center of a solid white wholecloth quilt, and the quilting could be done with a contrasting thread color. Still haven't done that, but that allowed me to get rid of the original "blankie." I have the lion design in my sewing room somewhere. Ya know, I could get that out, and it would be only a few weeks to hand quilt that. But what would I do with the finished baby quilt? We don't have any kids. I can only imagine using it as a lap quilt. Maybe that's why it's still just a drawing on a piece of paper. Perhaps you should figure out what you like about the original blanket so much. Is it the color? The fuzziness of the fabric? The mere fact that your mother made it especially for you? Then try to reproduce those characteristics in the new article that will take its place. Then the old one can go to blanket heaven.

Maifleur - clearly passing on family assets was important to them. Requirements differ as each organization that creates senior housing has their own guidelines that they follow. I guess we could think of it as good that the family members got their inheritance early, perhaps. Calirose, I agree that calculators are only one tool needed. I've never found a Web calculator that was able to take into account every aspect of my own financial plnng. The WSJournal one came the closest to being comprehensive. I was able to do a workaround that came out quite accurately. DH and I have our schedules full in retirement, and the article's statement that early retirement can see a sizable increase in expenditures due to traveling, is totally 'right on target' with us. Sometimes I joke to DH that it's a good thing we live in CA, because if you had to add airfare to the restaurants and hotel expenses of visiting all our wonderful travel attractions, we'd really go broke, LOL. Our 2-week Wine Country trip cost as much as going to Europe. Our scheduled fall trip to drive up and back to the PNW for an Alaskan cruise, will take over a month and really pack a budget wallop. But both of us have our small health issues, so we want to do this traveling while we still have energy and mobility. In line with the article, I expect our traveling will drop off as we age - I see this already in our WWII generation friends/family who are in their mid-80's and really starting to slow down, even the ones who loved (and could afford) traveling anywhere they wished. We did a lot of planning and budgeting for healthcare expenditures. Prayer is good, but planning is what gives me confidence the odds are as much in our favor as we could make them.

I sincerely doubt you are insurable at this point. Most plans would require you pay a high percentage over even the Standard rate, or make you wait at least a year before writing coverage on you. celticmoon is correct on the healthcare costs. A comprehensive health insurance costs slightly over $1K/mo. average for a couple. The advantage is that they can't drop you since it is a continuation of coverage. Also, wasn't there something in the President's stimulus plan about helping to pick up some of the cost of COBRA insurance for the unemployed - although I'm not sure that would cover self-termination/retirement, it may be restricted to those who are laid off. Maximum you would want to take is a 4% distribution annually. I have no idea what the immigration policy is in England, but your dollars would not go far as currently the US dollar is weak vs the pound, about $1.64/one pound. Canada's immigration policy varies per province. British Columbia is now almost completely closed to immigration unless you have $300K cash and intend to open a business. I think some of the other provinces are more open to immigration, but you will be contending with more severe weather. It's no joke how cold it gets in Calgary (my MIL's relatives live there so she visits regularly...in summer!). If you are really strapped for cash and want to retire, I'm afraid going South of the border is your best alternative. There are many cities with US ex-pats and very good healthcare. We have friends who have had to move out of the US because they couldn't afford to retire here. You should note that Medicare does NOT cover anything if you live outside the US. Medical care in South and Central America can be very good, however, and is inexpensive by US standards. Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico all have large ex-pat communities.

I will be retiring this Friday after 33 years with my company and I'm 57. My husband is retiring at the end of the year at 59. We decided to go ahead and do this because we're still healthy, can financially, have no grandkids to keep us occupied and plan on traveling, golfing, visiting our kids, and family members around the country, volunteering and just enjoying everyday we have. I still believe a boring day at home has got to be better than a day at work!

I can't tell you what it is like, but I anticipate it will like a perpetual vacation. I'll let you know in six months.

I can tell you... I retired at 55 after 30 plus years of working for an internationally known and well respected company. I loved working and all the perks, but never looked back after walking out the door for the last time. Absolutely no regrets. It was always my plan to retire at the first possible opportunity and had set financial goals to reach at certain periods in my life to make that possible.

It'll really dawn on you, upa lazy river, on Monday morning when your 33 year routine changes - can sleep in, no deadlines, all the work clothes can be put in the back of the closet... and congratulations!

A lot of my social circle did pretty much the same thing, all within the span of a couple of years... and that brought some change; relocations out of state, deaths, selling homes and moving to adult communities. We all found out pretty quickly that "things change". And I was the logical one in my family to relocate back to the family home to look after aging parents. And it was such a blessing having the time to do this, not juggling between many masters. Dad passed away a few years ago and Mom (Alzheimers) has been in long term care for 8 months now so this is sort of like my second retirement.

Having planned well, and having been lucky, I'm financially secure; have the long since paid for family home, zero debt. My time isn't too structured - I'm in the yard and gardens most of the day, take classes at the university, make the rounds of the farmers' markets, play cards in a little group, meet another group for coffee once a week. As time goes on, I'll find more and more of a niche and I am interested in doing some type of volunteering - but the beauty of the whole thing is that I really don't have to accomplish anything. For the first time in my life, I can actually set my own pace.

... with one major regret ... that my ex- chose to leave our relationship, over 35 years ago ... and passed away almost three years ago

duluth, I'm finally retired, am settling in well, but have found that I'm much more active during the day than I was when I was sitting behind the desk. There always is something to do. But I also see in the afternoon that a nap sounds good!

Minnie,

The '88 Mazda that cost $2,500. early this year ...

... cost over $3,000. to fix.

But my friend the body shop owner said that it makes more sense to fix it than the Taurus, last year.

The cost of repair is mostly for labour, only a small amount of materials, and that from the auto scrapyard.

Considering not only the amount of energy that it takes to mine and smelt the ore and build a car, plus the pollution and warming that using that energy produces, it seems a shame to scrap a car that, once repaired, will go for a substantial number of miles. With luck.

One of my personal contributions to making a small footprint on the earth by using less energy and producing less pollution and warming, I guess.

A worthy place to use some of the bucks that my frugality has produced, I figure.

And I came through the accident with a bit of skin about the size of a quarter scraped from my elbow (with the scab going about the time that I got the repaired car back).

I hope that the discomfort that the man driving the car that hit me felt just after the accident proves to have been superficial and temporary.

Given the circumstance ... one can be very thankful that there was not more damage or injury ... even possible death.

OJ sounds like you're doing ok. I have an old 88 Ford Tempo which I baby because I like it and it is paid for. I think I paid about the same and have spent twice that just keeping it alive. This year the mechanic changed out the A/C from that R12 freon stuff to the one you are supposed to use now. BUT The front blowers don't work too good and he wasn't able to find the parts. so I have some air coming outof the dashboard vents. I drive with the windows open when I can and use a cardboard fan as a diverter . remember those little window on the front that you could open and the air would flow in? I use the cardboard kind of like that. It is ok for me and since I don't have many passengers it works out. I mostly go places with DS in his well Air conditioned Jeep anyway!!
