I emailed Helen and she answered me and when I wrote again I got the email back. Has anyone heard from her? I know her husband passed away not long ago. Was wondering if she was alright?

I've had a few 'dwarf' varieties they do stay small in containers otherwise you will have to keep them trimmed to stay really dwarf. I have some in pots (13 or so) that I put in the gh during the winter. In the spring I plant them back out. I cut them wayyyy back and sever the roots in Dec to pot them back up again or they just freeze back too much in my zone 9a. They do just fine. I don't know why some people think they are finicky and fragile about transplanting. They are tough customers. In the summer, they grow about 20 ft or more and bloom their heads off especially in the fall. Some grow back real quick and bloom in the gh in the winter after they get cut back. I do have one purple standard bougie tree. I keep that one more cut back than the others at all times but it still wants to be a wild thang lol. I water and fertilize regularly most of the year. When I plant them out they are near Plumeria so get the same treatment as those. Frances, Just to reiterate, and add a few new ideas. Pope JP II black spots and has serious winter die back without protection here, just like all hybrid teas I know of do here, other than the Kordes ADR hybrid teas. When I did my extensive research on PJP II, I determined that it is a warm climate rose, and does better grafted in my zone rather than on its own roots. Every one around here is disappointed with its performance grown own root. Iceberg is fragrant here. To my nose, being in the autumn of its life, it scores a 6.5 out of 10, better than the frequently heard term 'moderately fragrant,' by a few notches. Iceberg has the same disease resistance and winter hardiness here as the common, garden variety of hybrid tea, very little. It also has gangly, one this way, one that day growth; the flowers nod. It looks best in a bed with several other Icebergs, at least two bushes deep and as long as you want. Here are some more whites to consider: Milwaukee's Calatrava. It's a Bill Radler rose, but not in the Knockout family, so its winter hardiness and disease resistance may be questionable. Its too new in my garden to tell yet. Bolero. Its a Meilland rose. Again, I have not had it long enough to know its characteristics yet. These two are powerfully fragrant and as white as you can get. I suspect spraying and winter protection are needed here (I spray religiously), for optimal enjoyment here. There's hardly a fragrant rose that is winter hardy and disease resistant, especially a white rose. Moses

I bet if you can get it grafted on Fortuniana it would do great in your soil. Mine is grafted on Multiflora since that does really well here. You're right, it is lucky to have nutritious soil, but the downside of my soil is that it is extremely thick like cement. Water doesn't penetrate it. It needs to be 'amended' with extreme amounts of mulch and we have to do a lot of manual work to make it so the nutrients in the soil can actually be released and available to plants. It's just as hard to work with, just in a different way. It's all relative. :-)

This is Betty!
I have not been on my computer for a while. I have been visiting my son in Ocala, Florida. I still have my home in The Villages, but am moving close to my son. I have been remodeling an old house about 2 blocks from him...:-)
In two weeks I will be moving in the house. Then I will be cleaning the house in The Villages to get ready to sell.
I miss my husband and wish he could be here with me (in person). He would like this old house. I know he is with me in spirit PTL.
I will soon be on my computer more. I will be getting a new service provider. Can anyone tell me how to change my email address here on this forum. I can't seem to find my profile.
I am doing well considering my loss and my age and doing all that I have been doing lately. But keeping busy has helped. But...then after I am settled I know I will be so lonely without my mate of 59 years :-(
But, God has been good to me. My children are just great and such a help. Life must go on, but sometimes I wonder why.

I'm sad that you have lost your loved one.

I'm sure that you'll be a little sad to be leaving The Villages, for you seemed to like it so much and have a number of friends, there.

My old farmer uncle lost his second wife (of nearly 40 years) just over a year ago and he, in mid-80's, still keeping cattle in barn. No children from either marriage (and his sister, my stepmother, only other one in their family, had only one daughter, our newly-minted only sister when our parents married) so I stayed with him for a couple of months after, as his back, hip, leg in poor condition - didn't want him lying in a snowbank by the barn.

He's feeling lonely, also - I went to visit last Thursday when that major power outage hit us.

He was pleased that my brother, visiting here from the Prairies recently, visited him.

There are things that one can do even at advanced age, Betty, to bring a ray of sunshine, a kind word or a thoughtful remembrance into the lives of friends - even strangers.

Perhaps a local agency that deals with seniors would put you in touch with some and you could form a telephone chain to call one to one through the chain every morning, possibly also evening, to ensure that everyone in good shape.
