Major Medical 'ONLY' Is It Possible?

I'm still hoping to come across a Medical insurance that doesn't eat up 1/3 to 1/2 of our monthly income.

Has anyone ever heard of a policy that is Major Medical Only?

Ours has such a high deductible that we will end up paying all our med. expenses out of pocket. I wonder if we could find Major only, and still pay expenses out of pocket. Hopfully the monthly would be at least half the cost of what we have. That way our expenses would be the same, but ins. payments more reasonable.

Is there such a thing?

What would be your definition of "Major Medical"? I think that there are such and, if I am not mistaken, what it boils down to is that you have to run up a huge hospital bill before it kicks in. If you don't go to the hospital as an inpatient, you don't collect. At least that was the way one plan I looked at a long time ago worked. With all the same-day out patient surgery, etc, it wouldn't be very useful.

This would be the same as having a great big deductable with you paying just about all of your doctor bills.

Decide exactly what you think you would need covered and then get on the phone and call the major insurance lines. Sometimes the smaller independant agencies can steer you in the right direction. they might have exactly what you need.

I see whatever doctor that I choose (if I can find one willing to take new patients) whenever I have need. Including one general physical exam per year. No arguing about whether someone can pay.

Direct cost to me? Zero.

If I need to see a specialist for a non-urgent problem, frequently there's a waiting period, often substantial. Needed treatment is provided without consideration as to who's to pay.

Direct cost to me? Zero.

When I need urgent hospital care, I get it. No argument about who's to pay.

Direct cost to me? Zero.

If I am willing to accept ward care (usually 4 persons).

Quite a number of people choose to carry medical insurance for semi-private or private rooms, plus a number of other medical costs above basic ones.

When my need is less urgent, I may be required to wait for a time, even though I may suffer some pain, decreased mobility, or other non-debilitating illness which might make my functioning in the workplace difficult, even impossible. As my pension cheque is deposited into my bank account monthly, regardless, inability to function in my workplace is not an issue with me.

When I want non-essential care, e.g. unnecessary cosmetic surgery, such as face-lift, etc. I must pay for that myself. People that meet me can take my face the way it is - or look elsewhere.

I receive drugs in hospital at no cost, but must pay for them when outside (but there is a low cost plan for seniors).

I must pay for ambulance service myself - often about $250.00, I hear.

Many Europeans receive high quality health care - at a much lower percentage of their Gross National Product than we do in Canada, and our health care cost is a much lower percentage of our Gross National Product than in the U.S.

Further, everyone is covered - but in the U.S. something more than 10% have no health care coverage, though most do receive treatment of some kind, I think.

I prefer the bottom line in the health care field to be, "Do you need the care?" rather than "Who's going to pay? We have to have a profit, you know". As well as large advertising budget.

Good wishes to all for high quality health care for all - at reasonable cost.

P.S. A male friend said a while ago that he didn't like having the doctor stick his finger up his rear end to check out his prostate.

I said - "You think that you have problems - how would you like to be the doctor?"

When he thought of the situation from that viewpoint - he agreed that he had the better part of it.

P.P.S. As we bring resources from many parts of the world, process them and sell them at a profit, it seems only fair that we contribute to increased health care and education in those areas where life is ofen difficult, brutal - and short.

While I am thankful, pleased and proud to be Canadian - it was an accident of birth that made me so, rather than a citizen of a much less fortunate area. So, especially as I consider myself a Christian, I feel that I owe some people there a share in my good fortune.

Not only do I expect that God may have some interesting - and most likely embarrassing - questions to ask me after this realm of living - I find that He/She asks them of me now, as well.

Probably show me a movie of my life as it was - and how much more help I could have been in the world had I been truly Christ-like. A movie that I don't think that I may enjoy seeing. EB

I think what you're referring to is the thread in which you announced you were dropping all your heart failure meds and wanted to know what herbs to use instead. You were unhappy to be advised to consult your physician before making such a momentous decision. Occasionally some supporter of folklore-based herbalism will post here, complaining about how advocates for evidence-based medicine (herbal or otherwise) are supposedly turning off people and convincing them not to use science to help make decisions about their health. You'd think they'd be happy about that since it would mean converts to their way of thinking, but they're not. More likely, they're concerned that many forum visitors actually do appreciate having good evidence and are open to the idea of complementary medicine instead of having a rigid anti-mainstream medicine position.

Thanks for replying, kimmsr. This all seems more and more like a no-win situation this year. And yet someone on GardenWeb said that she produced one little bucket of weeds per summer out of a 3,550 or so square foot flower garden. Maybe she used four to six inches of mulch, I don't know, but I thought it was two or three. Also, I went on a garden tour recently, and four people had flower gardens about the size of mine, and they seemed to be using about one inch of Soil Pep. (Either they told me that's how much they used, or I dug a little back with my fingers to find out.) These gardens were being maintained by one person, and they were from 13 to 20 years old (the gardens, that is; the people were much older!). Possibly the explanation for this is that over the years they had depleted the seeds in the soil bank by sprouting and then killing them, obviously without letting any of them form more seeds. The real Catch-22 for me is that I actually want seeds to sprout in my mulch, but only my flower seeds, not the weed seeds. With an extremely thick, rough-textured mulch (say, six inches of arborist's wood chips), how on earth does anyone manage to have self-seeding flowers, or clumping shrubs and grasses, or spreading ground covers, or bulbs? How does anyone direct-sow seeds? It almost seems that you'd need to cover the native soil with thin layers of weed-free soil/compost/fine mulch repeatedly, and continually hand-weed, to get this to work. If the mulch, which is being used to cover the weed-seed-filled soil, accumulates weed seeds itself, it would make sense to me to add more mulch to cover the first mulch, maybe twice a year. So if I put down too much mulch at first, I wouldn't be able to add more until some of the first had decomposed (and then too many weed seeds would accumulate in it). There must be an optimal amount of mulch to add per year, after taking into account how much of it decomposes each year. This should lead to the level of mulch slowly increasing every year. I need to figure out what that amount should be when I'm using Soil Pep (or small bark chips on the paths and around trees). On the other hand, at the very beginning I need to add enough to somewhat effectively suppress weeds, not so little that it merely encourages them. Then there's the price. All total, including the vegetable garden, I actually have 5,715 square feet to cover with either mulch (Soil Pep in my case: 4,525 square feet) or wood chips (for paths and around trees: 1,190 square feet). They're both $4.49 for a two-cubic-foot bag. (I'm actually leaving out the cost of compost, sphagnum moss, rock phosphate, greensand, and elemental sulfur, because I consider those as more conditioners or fertilizers than mulches and they have very little bulk. But they still cost a lot of money.) At one inch I'd need 189 bags of mulch and 50 bags of chips, for a total of $1,073. At two inches I'd need 377 bags of mulch and 99 bags of chips, for a total of $2,137. And so on: three inches would cost $3,210, and four inches would cost $4,279. Five or six inches is out of the question for physical reasons. The beds and paths aren't raised, contained, edged, or separated, so the material would just spill over at the edges. I have many flowers, including tall ones like hollyhocks and delphiniums, that only get five or six inches tall the first and even second year. (Weird, I know.) I can't completely bury my flowers; that would defeat the whole purpose. I guess two to three inches per year is all I can handle, both money-wise and time-wise. Our car can hold 12 bags, so each inch takes 20 trips. It takes a lot of time just to buy, load, haul around, and distribute all of that material. I guess what I want to know is: If I add one inch of Soil Pep twice a year, and less than that decomposes each year, so that eventually I have an ongoing level of three inches on average, will that make much difference in the amount of time I have to spend weeding? Should I leave my dead lupine vegetation lying around to add to the mulch and not worry about the powdery mildew?

I dont think you can judge people just on being overweight. For about 5 years I had been unable to lose weight and had off the scale cholesterol results, my doctor kept assuming it was my diet at fault so for years I excercised, tried to eat right, couldnt lose weight, my cholesterol barely improved and my health deteriorated. I ended up with hormonal problems, liver problems, was having bad hypoglycaemic attacks every day (even though tests cleared me of any diabetic problems), I was apathetic and low on energy. everyone just treated me like a fat lazy person, including my doctor, and it took a very clever specialist to finally diagnose me with diabetes and pcos, she got me on the right medications, sent me to a fanatastic dietician, I finally got my life back and I have been losing weight ever since. when you have certain conditions like diabetes, your body very easily stores fat and you develop a number of other complications so you cant look at a diabetic and say "it's because they are fat", because their condition makes it hard to exercise (low energy) and in many cases their weight is probably caused by the diabetes and they struggle to lose weight. some people may have been raised in situations where they simply dont know how to eat healthily, or they may not be able to afford to eat well, they may have conditions that just make them overweight, they could be prone to alcoholism , or addiction, you just dont know but if someone gets sick they deserve help no matter what to get them well again.

Depends on what you mean by "Major Medical" Some companies call a policy with a huge deductible,(several thousand) Major medical because it picks up and pays a certain percent after you have paid that deductable. Others will have a lot of restrictions. Some will pay only if you are in a hospital. At your age, you could get a regular policy with any on the main line companies like AARP, Blue Cross, New York Life. I think that would be your best bet and forget about any other type of policy. Decide what you need and don't need. Dental coverage is nice if you have terrible teeth, but isn't worth the cost if your teeth are in good shape. The same thing is true of things like organ transplants, and ambulance fees. Nice if you need them, but most likely you would not. Therefore, not worth the additional premium. When you reach 65, Medicare will pay 80% of the APPROVED amount and your insurance will pick up only the remaining 20%.
