Need Help with Medicare

I'm in Georgia and will start Medicare June 1. I don't understand it all and I need someone I can sit down with in person and talk to. Is there a certain agency or someone who will help me?

Try your local Social Security office.

However you also need to look at what you want to have covered. Hubby is under original Medicare because I was a government employee before I retired and I kept the government health insurance. My HMO covers our medicenes without the doughnut some companies had but unlike some of the other non-governmental HMO policies by the same company he does not have his YMCA dues covered by my policy. Some cover medicenes others do not. You should be receiving all kinds of information from insurance companies to review.

It is very confusing but start with the SS office for inital information. Then make a list of what you need and another for your wants.

If you have a Council on Aging, or a good Senior Citizens Center they have people who can help you and/or get information so you can learn more.

I called the local office and was told that the congressman that WAS in our small town, is an attorney now...though it still has him on the Internet as the congressman for our county...Shows you how little I keep up with politics. The lady gave me a number to call our "new" congressman...Phil Gringey. Who's office is not located in our town. I spoke with a man briefly, mentioning the social security letter and medicare...He said that he would have to send us a form to fill out, to get our permission for them to "look into it." Social Security called yesterday and told us the "Reconsider" was turned down. That we could file an appeal to Waiver it...I said, Ok., and they'll send a paper to file out. Seems that you have 2 options after SS claims they overpaid you...One is that you want them to Reconsider the situation because you don't believe that you are at fault in any way...the other is a Waiver...that asks them to waive it because you're not financially able to pay it back. Doubt that is in our favor either...because I told the SS lady yesterday that I don't see how we can live on $229.00 a week...and she said, "Sure you can." I asked, How?...and she said, "Just sit down and go over what you owe, and you'll see that you can eliminate a few of them." She didn't say what "them" were. Eliminate what? water? phone? electricity? gas? insurance? food?

Susan, My folks have been on Medicare for years but had to make the dreaded "prescription" choice a few years ago. My dad takes many meds--my mom only takes one. My niece spent two days making phone calls for them and found that they were eligible for some government program that pays half of their premiums. That was GREAT! (Check to see if you are eligible...I was surprised they were!) Then my niece ended up signing them up with AARPs prescription program. My dad's meds would run about $4,000/year but cost only about $400. Many times when he is on a short-term antibiotic, his RX is less than a dollar. :-) My mom's meds would run about $1,000/year but cost only about $100. I think their premiums are around $15/month each.

I have only encountered one MD who opted out of Medicare. This was the orthopod who did my left hip replacement before I was 65. I was foolish to go back to him for the right hip after he opted out. There are tons of other highly qualified orthopods. I paid $7K with zero reimbursement. Dumb Sue. Some MD's with 'niches' can get away with opting out. Ten years ago I found that some GP's were going the 'retainer' route. They charged a patient a set annual fee ($8-10K) and spent no time 'messing' with Medicare or any other insurance plan. I don't know if that worked. I haven't heard anything about it recently.

Go to your Senior citizen or "Y" or stop by your city hall.You would be surprised how many people are waiting to help you.If there is a sociel security building near by try that too.

There is a lot of talk about Medicare Supplements these days.Some of the Medicare Supplements, often called Medigap, cover different things. In addition, Medicare Advantage covers a number of things that are not covered by basic plans.Medigap is an insurance that covers the gaps left by Medicare. And although Medigap is a private coverage insurance, it is highly regulated by both federal and state government, and for this reason it is affordable by many seniors.
