What do retirees do for medical insurance if they're too young for Medicare?

RE: medical insurance

We are so incredibly lucky - my husband's work (Los Angeles Police Department) pays for our medical until we are old enough for Medicare and then pays for supplemental insurance....lifetime dental insurance also. I guess there are perks for people who have to wear a badge in big bad Los Angeles. I will be 55 and dh will be 60 when we retire in a little under 3 years.

How fortunate to have that option. Looks like we'll be working til 65 just for insurance.

Don't got none.

Don't need it.

See whatever doctor I choose (if I can find one), whenever I choose (if specialist, usually need referral). No fee - unless it's for face-lifts, or other unnecessary care.

If I need elective hospital care, I'll likely have to wait a while, but no fee for regular care: some carry Blue Cross, etc. for upgraded care (e.g. private room, etc.).

First question at hospital door is, "Is the care indicated?", rather than, "Does the guy have a cheque-book (or insurance)?".

Yeah - Canadians spell funny: "cheque" = "check" - one o' them pieces o' paper that transfers money from one person's bank account to another's.

Thankful, thankful that I live in Canada.

(still) joyful guy
