Lake Seminole in Georgia

Our count down will start in April. 1 year to go. We have visited this area and liked it. Anyone out there living

in this area during the winter for retirement? Thanks for any input.

I'm fairly familiar with the area since my hometown is about an hour away. We used to fish Lake Seminole quite a bit too. It's awfully secluded feeling in the winter time and fairly deserted. I would be concerned about convenience in finding needed items and medical care. Have you spent much time in the area? Do you have family or friends there?

What part of GA is that in? I have visited (only on vacation) in the North East corner of GA. My sis has a cabin in the foothills of the Blue Ridge.

In the SouthWestern states, most golf courses nowadays are watered with "reclaimed" water. (So is the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden.) This is a very very good way to preserve growing things, in days when water is tight. I might mention that at 10:45 a.m., it was 88 degrees in the shade of an old avocado tree, at the bottom of my garden On the back patio, it was 83 degrees. On top of the roof where windspeed is measured, it's already 88 degrees. This is pretty discouraging, for the 15th of November, with no rain in sight. Hey ya'll. I live in Thomasville, about 15 miles from the FL line and about 30 miles from Tallahassee. Born and raised here and except for college never stayed away. Over here we are surrounded by plantations that have fabulous gardens and pines. The house I live in now backs up to Millpond Plantation and used to be a part of it. I started growing orchids a few years ago and have so many my greenhouse is full! I think FoxesEarth gave some pretty great ideas for growing in this area. There's also lots of things that grow further down that will grow here except they die back in the winter. I even grow supposed annuals such as begonias and impatiens that come back every year with mulch. I also like Lemon Verbena and Greek Myrtle. I just got Dirrs new book Trees and Shrubs for Warm Climates and it gave me a few ideas but the one I can't live without is Southern Living's Garden Book. Pine straw is the best mulch anywhere around and there's plenty of it in these parts. I am always willing to try things that aren't supposed to grow here and have been successful with several things. My landscaper almost died when she saw my hellebores and lilac! I also like to grow herbs and there is a great herb farm in Madison, Florida which is not too far from Valdosta. It's called O'Tooles. The only things I really wish I could grow is English lavender and a hemlock. Sigh. So I settled for a raised bed of different lavender and a Deodar Cedar. Guess you can't have it all! Hope we can play off each other quite a bit. I love new ideas since mine don't always work!

Moultrie is zone 8 unless its been changed recently. I grew up in that area and loved it. I'm now 2 hours west of Moultrie and recently went back there for family reasons on a visit and couldn't believe at all the business that were closed down. The older section of town looks like a ghost town compared to what it once was IMO. There are a lot of small surrounding towns that you may want to consider as far as housing it may be cheaper. Its been awhile since I've plant shopped there as well, but the nearby town of Pelham (30 min. drive) is a nursery called Laytons (a family run business) that I love going to. Very nice folks, good selection and prices. Also in Thomasville there are several nurseries to check out, another 30 min. drive from Moultrie. After all these years of being away from there, I've always called Moultrie home. P.S. Your brugs will grow just fine there as well as long as they are mulched well in the winter. I planted 6 Seminole Pumpkin seeds (got from SESE) in 2 hills back in April in South Florida. Meant to thin but never did. The vines ran and ran, and didn't want to climb. They keep setting roots as they go. We had a hellishly hot and relatively dry summer; during that time there were only male flowers. In the mornings, Cardinals, Orioles and other birds congregated to eat the bugs and caterpillars in the flowers and vines. We too had lots of bees and also a moth which were pollinating. I picked a lot of those male flowers and used them like squash blossoms - good in omelets, etc. Now that it's cooler I'm getting fruit set, but the vine is also dying - nematodes, I think. Two Pumpkins we've picked were pinkish-tan, 14 & 20 ounces only. Glad to hear we can still enjoy immature green fruit. Regarding a dog - one of our greyhounds was "caught" yesterday trying to carry off one of the pumpkins and playing with it like a ball! so it's not a perfect solution either.

Hayjud, it's in the lower southwestern corner of Georgia, bordering Florida. It's off 84E between Donaldsonville and Bainbridge. Lake Seminole is very large, flows from the Chattahoochee River. It is absolutely LOADED with huge alligators. You have to take great care in traveling a majority of the waters in Lake Seminole (easy to get lost and a map is recommended), there's a lot of stick ups, stumps and trees barely below the water. The Chattahoochee River has a lot of barge traffic and it's not unusual for the water table in the adjacents lakes to be very low during the summer. There's area pockets that has a high population of weekender cabins, mobile homes and some full time residents.

I don't recall if you're interested in true crime stories but in the late 1970's there was a horrible crime near the area. There was a couple of books written and a tv movie. The murderers were finally caught in Va. or W. Va. as I recall. They tortured and murdered 5 family members of the Alday family.

Well....I guess all that's a little bit more information than you asked for...LOL

I always visualized alligators as slow moving creatures, dragging themselves up on the river bank. Shortly before I moved here, I saw a show on Boston TV that showed an alligator up on all fours running at 35 mph after someone. It was in Florida, and I moved here anyhow. BTW, I am totally incapable of running at 35mph, so I'd be lunch.
