What are you looking forward to seeing this year?
Comments (8)Gldno1, I admire your dedication (and energy)! I am letting my irises bloom this year (or not), but then will have to dig and divide. It's not so much that they're crowded; it's that grass and speedwell are choking them. I'm not looking forward to this.......and I'm glad clashing colors have never been an issue with me. :-) I planted four Buck roses last year: Quietness, Aunt Honey, Earth Song, and Prairie Sunrise. I'm delighted with the way they came through the winter. Two others that were new last year (not Bucks)--Strike it Rich and Sunsprite--suffered more damage but are still with us. I usually avoid hybrid teas, but fell in love with Abbaye de Cluny two years ago. It died down to the ground last year, but came back to produce those sumptuous blooms. Ditto this year, although I won't see the blooms till June. It's always exciting to see perennials of all kinds come back. They're like old friends....See MoreRetired to the south two years ago but
Comments (11)Which part of the South did you move to? I don't know if it makes a difference, but I've lived in many places around So Cal, and no one EVER greeted me. When we moved into this house in fall of 2003, I was SHOCKED that on Christmas Eve Morning the next door neighbors came ringing our doorbell (I was still asleep!), introduced themselves and had a home-made jar of cookie dough mix for us! They explained they wanted to wait to give us time to get settled before coming over. I have NEVER experienced this in the past. Sad but true, people are either "too busy" or tend to keep to themselves these days. It's not like it was in the 50's or 60's - when everyone knew everyone. OR, What if you make friends with your neighbors, and then decide you have "problems" with them...or, worse, THEY have problems with YOU! My hubby just RECENTLY met the neighbors across the street for the first time. They have lived there over a year now! My son's dog got out one day, and hubby had to go across to get him. THAT created his first short meeting. Then one night we heard a loud crash. The neighbor was trying to haul a pick-up truck up their steep driveway with a small car (wife driving & hubby in the truck), and the cable snapped. Hubby took his truck and helped haul the truck up. Now - when neighbor sees hubby outside, he hollers "hello!". We've lived here about 2-1/2 years now. I had every intention to go out and about and meet neighbors. I've been too embarassed, as we STILL are not settled in - boxes and "stuff" everywhere! Plus, may hair hasn't seen the inside of a beauty salon in like 7 years, and my glasses broke about 3 years ago - so they sit on one ear only (plus I can't see anyway). We've had numerous problems - hot water leak under foundation in kitchen area which cost a fortune not just in repairs, but in water and gas bills for four months, mice in kitchen that showed up when they started digging up the neighborhood to build new houses, bees that decided to make home in our wall...not to mention that both hubby and I messed up our backs while moving - hubby actually fractured something in there - so HE was down for several months, son decided he needed to move back home for awhile - so even MORE stuff! It just never ends. I am on disability, so I can't do much so fast these days... So, we meet new friends - then what? I can't even let them in house because it's still a disaster, PLUS, we dumped our sofa and loveseat when we moved - nowhere to sit! PERSONALLY, I've been in hiding! LOL! Everything is just too stressful right now. I WANT to be neighborly - it's just me and this mess holding me back. I HAVE gone out and introduced myself to neighbors in past. But seems everyone wants to distance themselves. I don't know what the deal is. I guess if I threw a bar-b-q every weekend with written/hand delivered invitations, and had a pool and lots of entertainment, they MIGHT show up and become friendly...haha......See MoreWhat are you looking forward to this year?
Comments (26)This will be our 3rd year at our house as well... I always look forward to the leap! But at the end of summer I moved a bunch of plants. I had haphazardly planted lots of stuff and decided to move things more by color. Our house is beige so I decided the yellows, oranges and reds should be in the beds around the house and the pinks, purples, blues, etc. are now in the long backyard bed. That's going to be my more fun area where anything I want to try can grow. I'm looking forward to all of it!...See MoreRetirement plans
Comments (70)Between DD being diagnosed with breast cancer and COVID, our retirement plans are fluid. We are in our mid 60's and had planned to split our time between FL, NH and ME. We had also hoped to at some point to boat the Grand Loop. As of now, DD and her three year old are living with us and we are helping support them so retirement is on hold. Our goal is or was to pass our business on to the children, work part time helping them out, spending time in our other homes and traveling. Doesn't look like that is going to happen anytime soon. My parents aged in place until they passed and my in laws are 90+ and still live in the family home so that is our plan. Our primary home is a ranch that we have been slowly renovating to accomodate us as we age. If anything happens to my DH, all bets are off. I can't manage a business, rental properties and multiple homes without him. The kids are great and they can manage most of the business but I would defnitely have to liquidate some things. I have two very close friends and we have plans in place if one or all of us lose our husbands. I am grateful we started making those plans many years ago....See Moresushipup1
