| They must spend a fortune sending out letters trying to get you to join. Seems like I get one about every month. I like the magazine they put out but I really don't need it. Are any of the other things they offer worth a flip? Any members of AARP here? |

| I like the auto insurance, have had it for many years, had one claim, which was settled promptly, and the rates are better than others in this State. |

| I keep a membership because I make it back on reduced hotel charges. I enjoy the magazine. My father-in-law tried and hated the insurance. I have no idea why |

| You think you may have problems. Just look at the initals of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons. They have a mag as well - "Good Times". I was a member for a while, but haven't been for some time, though wondered recently whether to join again. It seems to me that it is more or less the creation (baby) of one person, perhaps now a few, whereas the U.S. one has a membership that's more democratically run. The lady behind the Canadian group has done some effective lobbying, especially for seniors' issues. The Canadian Association has some links to favoured agencies, corporations, etc. - esp. re insurance. I have received a few membership solicitations, but not a large number by any means. Lots of charitable requests come in the mail, though: not suggesting that CARP had anything to do with that. Could I send you a few? Have a glorious New Year. ole joyful |

My husband is a member of AARP and a few times we have used their discounts for hotels and meals. I appreciate the lobbying they did to discourage privatizing Social Security. I think they were instrumental in protecting our children's SS checks when they retire. I feel the plan was to give more business to those who sell stocks, more money for the stock market. One more plan for the rich to get richer - think how many people don't invest in the stock market now and how much more the broker fees would be if the general public were investing, How they'd love to get their hands on a larger portion of the public's money.
But this is only my opinion, not that of my husband.

| Be aware that the AARP has a left wing socialist agenda, if that's what you are about, fine, but many who support them are unaware of this. |

| Oh beaglebuddy - my daughter will not join the aarp because they are too right wing for her - personally I dont think a little socialism does any harm - |

| Left, right??? Who knows... But I noticed they started their own Medicare drug discount thingy after they helped pass the bill.. LOL I do know we get a discount on our auto insurance (Citizens), motels and a lot of other things because hubby belongs to AARP.... Rita |

| Moving this old thread to the top. A lot more lawyers are specializing in Elder Law and many give discounts to AARP members. My brother took advantage of that last year and the discount was 30% - which is substantial for establishing a Revokable Living Trust, updating a will and all the collateral documents. I'll be doing the same this spring. |

| In October, my sisters and I took a two-week vacation to the Northeastern states. We stayed at various hotels/motels and did quite a bit of sightseeing. I have AAA (Automobile Club) and one of my sisters has AARP. My triple A card was accepted in more places than AARP, and also gave us a larger discount on hotels, car rental and flight, including discount on admission to a couple of museums. I had AARP for one year and that was enough. |

| I had an experience similar to Eloise. Went on a vacation, the triple A discounts were equal or better than AARP. The magazine is fluff. Read it for free online or at your public library. |

| I use the AARP supplemental insurance. It is great. When I turned 65 I asked an older neighbor what company she used and she told me AARP. She also told me that she knew people with Blue cross and they were not happy with their company - so I bought the same company as she had - the aarp. In the four years I have had the supplemental insurance I have had some very expensive hospital stays and never paid one dime ( I use medicare plan F). Also, in my area, at least, the specialists will accept aarp. When the new drug insurance came out, I chose aarp and so far, it works fine. I stopped being a member because I don't read the magazine. We save a few hundred on our car ins. for one thing. I get extra tips out of the magazine. Use the motel savings. That is about what I get out of being a member.
