I was hoping someone would say that. I'd like to come back in the new year and see "Garage Door Openers" as a distinct Forum separate from "Home Repair".

this same post comes up periodically, and i will answer the sam eway i hav ein the past. THERE IS ALREADY A GARAGE FORUM SPECIFICALLY FOR THESE PROBLEMS.

the biggest problem is that people google GDO problem and it points them to this particular forum on THS. unless and until iVillage moves all opener threads to teh garage forum, AND google/other engines then updates links, this will continue.

Isn't a broken garage door applicable to the Home Repair Forum also? Didn't know the Home Repair nazi was out and about. Sorry, but I didn't care for you shouting at me. I did put my post over there on the Garage Forum after you said/shouted that there is a Garage Forum. I never noticed it. So sorry.

I believe Sears Craftsman is made by Chamberlain / Liftmaster so your selection just got much smaller.

Thanks for the heads up on Liftmaster. I believe our builder put in one 2 years ago when we had second garage built. So far no problems with it. Will have to check it out in warmer weather.

no, i was not shouting at you. i was pointing out to the 2nd poster that there is already a forum for it and people ignore it because all teh search links point here to all teh old threads from before the forum was created. you would be surprised how many people post in similar threads as this and even after the forum is pointed out they still ask about getting a GDO forum. thus, the reason for the caps. maybe it will catch the eye of the next 10-15 people before they ask for a forum that already exists.

I think it should be a "craftsman" garage door opener forum since that seems to be the center of the posts. Common sense will tell anyone that obviously sears has a bunk product. Go with genie.

I find it surprising if you've been a member here since 2001 and you make this post. Someone inevitably posts a similar "observation and conclusion" about Craftsman openers about once a year. There were/are at least two VERY knowlegable opener repair specialists at this site (Don and GDO_Specialist) that helped countless individuals with DIY repairs on openers. these same guys also posted responses to the derogatory posts endorsing and supporting the overall reliability and economy of Craftsman openers.

They went into detail on how if anyone googles "Craftsman garage door repair" they will likely end up here. (In fact when I joined here in 2003 it was for an opener repair question.)

IIRC, They said that Sears is the leading seller of GDOs to homeowners and if one could get statistics of openers sold / posted problems the ratio would probably be less than other manufacturers.

I think someone should also do an analysis of the age of the "problem" opener from each post or how many posts are associated with user error or misuse as opposed to manufacturing defects/issues.

Bottom line is that I am not associated with Sears and have nothing to gain by posting this.

I'm on my second Craftsman GDO. The first lasted >15 years and even then could have been repaired with a $40 kit. Instead I opted to buy a new Craftsman unit that came with two remotes and a keyless entry pad for I recommend that people at least post some facts before posting a general post that a product is no good.

I only have two facts. One from a friend who over twenty years ago was a sears repir person. The other, our current overhead garage door company who both want nothing to do with a sears/craftsman garage door opener. One who repaired, the other who started out using them in their business finding too many call backs and switched to genie.

I took a look at the 'Garage' forum---it is titled Garage/Shop---NOT garage door problem forum. It seems intended for conversations/information/advice about shops in garages or stand al;ones.

It seems the GDO folks have taken it over---when logically, GDO problems should be in Home Repair forum.

there was a post from the gods that be here when teh garage/workshop forum was created specifying that it was the place for GDO questions. several threads actually were moved over there. as a matter of a fact, part of the driving force behind it's creation was people in THIS forum requesting it.

using your arguement that opener problems should go here, why not get rid of the plumbing/eletrical/HVAC/etc.. forums and lump them all in here?

It seems that there should then be a separate forum for correcting improper forum posts.

Oh boy! There have been complaints in the garage/workshop forum about the door opener posts. They want that forum for drawers, shelves and epoxy floors. Some people also post opener problems in the tool shed forum. It isn't a problem for me as I can go wherever but some people do seem to find scrolling a somewhat difficult task.

I guess the g.d.o.'s should have their place and it's easy to ignore them if it doesn't pertain to individual interests, so in the grand scheme of things, being on any forum, it really isn't that big a deal. Sorry about my cry baby sally attitude towards the garage door posts, live and let live!

A friend lived in an apartment and was into ham radios or some type of radio communication. He accidently stumbled on a frequency that operated the garage door opener across the street. He proceeded to have a blast driving the homeowner as well as the repair person crazy when the repair person showed up to make the fix. The repair person was called out several times!

The only reason I posted about the Craftsman GDO's was because over the years I have popped into this forum once in a while and it seemed to have a lot of posts on this subject. Finally just decided to voice my opinion(freedom of speech and all that).
Our first GDO was a Genie and DH installed it in 1978. He replaced it in 2006. Yes, there were a few repairs to it, but nothing major!

both our GDO's are Craftsman. i replaced both late 70's models 3 years ago. the reason they failed, dirt bauber nests inside them had ground the gears down. since they were close to 30 years old, i figured it was time.

oh, and the reason for the nests was that the previous owner had only 1 vehicle and he kept 1 door open all teh time and the other shut all teh time. if he left the house, he simply locked the inside door. he did not even have a remote when we bought the house!
