| Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum..
I'm in NJ, Burlington County and have noticed that some roofs here (not sure if it's other counties) have what look like black marks on them. I never noticed this in North Jersey, but have seen it since I've been down here.. I've looked around trying to find a common with the roofs.. like trees & sap, sun, shade and so far can't see any commons. This not only happens on dark roofs but light ones too. When I moved down here, story was that the planes from the military base were dumping the fuel before landing, and what we see on the roofs are the result of that.. now, I find this hard to believe that planes dump fuel.. but that's what it looks like on the roof. I wish I had a picture. I can probably get one if needed. Wonder if it's a chemical in the roof that is bleeding out? |

| Could it be mold, from being near the water? |

| Probably is mold. Zinc is toxic to mold so look on the downhill side of some galvanized metal on the roofs (metal vents, flashing) if it's not there it's mold. |
|
| I'll see if I can get a picture. I was out the other day and didn't have the camera. Mold may be what some of it is as what I saw the other day looked like mold where some look like the tar paper is bleeding through. |

| The stains are algae. The link is an FAQ about the staining from GAF. http://www.gaf.com/Content/Documents/22710.pdf |

| Amazing read, I've seen it too and wondered. It grows better on the north side, and can spread through the air. This explains why I see it in just this one area of Atlantic county, even though the houses were done by different contractors. |

| Just happened to find one in my saved real estate search. Reading that pdf link, looks like it's algae. I'll have to keep looking around to see if they are different. |

| Somebody in the Navy Reserve told a long time ago that dumping aviation fuel is not uncommon. But he also said that it evaporates almost immediately - never hits the ground. |
