Demo and re-tile of bathroom tub/shower tiles

Anyone have a great place to send me for info on how to take down damaged tiles in the tub area and also how to put up a water resistant backing and then of course retile the area? I originally wanted to go to a contractor on this...but money is too tight and the tiles are in dire need of repair. I am a great "helper" and my husband is really handy, so I think with the right info this project should work out.

Thanks so much for any info y'all can provide!
