Ceiling Plaster

Hi,

Iv just purchased an old house, but the plaster has fallen off on one of the ceilings in a large chunk. under the plaster there seems to be beams running across the ceiling and cracking were more beams might be. what are the beams and are they the problem? help

Are you seeing wood lath?

These are thin strips of wood (1/4 to 3/8 inch) 1bout 1 to 1.25 inches wide with 1/4 inch or so gaps between the strips.
