What insulation?

More than one kind can be blown.

this will probably start a big discussion...
but I don't have a problem with rolls of fiberglass.
easy to move if you have stuff to do later in the attic
and if fitted into joist bays without stuffing and voids
will perform as rated.
the advantage with blown is that it settles down in
all the joist bays without fitting.
later work in attic can be problematic.

there is blown fiberglass, white (not itchy), yellow
and pink (itchy) blown cellulose (borate treated newspaper)
and sometimes/some areas blown rockwool.
so there are different types.

you can also blow foam insulation. we use open cell
on the roofline (6" to cover faces of 2x6 rafters)
this is the most expensive option but provides
other advantages.

if not using foam, air sealing between attic and
living space below should be done before adding
insulation. same for duct sealing..do the sealing
before insulation.

Good advice above. If you dont have ducts in the attic, blown cellulose should be cheapest and most effective, especially if you DIY. Big box stores will rent you the blower for free if you buy a certain amount which usually isnt much.

I had blown cellulose put in my attic last year. It's made a huge difference in the warmth of the house and in heating bills. The installer left some space for storage. My electrician said they are used to wallowing around in the stuff to work in attics. They can just push it aside and put it back when done. My two cents.

A small adjustable rake works well.
